Patch Ideas for Denim, Leather and Bomber Jackets

The jacket decides more than the design does. Fabric weight, surface and how often it gets washed all point to a material, a size and a backing. Here's what works on the jackets we're asked about most.

Denim jackets

Denim is the easiest jacket to patch. It's flat, sturdy cotton that takes iron-on adhesive and holds stitches well. Classic layouts include a single back piece, a cluster of small patches on the chest and sleeves, or a fully patched "battle jacket" built up over years. Embroidered patches with a merrowed border look most at home on denim; leather patches give it a workwear feel.

Leather jackets

Leather can't take iron-on heat, so every patch gets sewn. Embroidered and leather patches both suit it. Keep patches on flat panels, like the back yoke, the chest or the upper sleeve, and away from seams and zippers. Every needle hole in leather is permanent, so lay the patch out with tape before anyone sews.

Bomber, satin and nylon jackets

Lightweight shells scorch, melt or pucker under an iron. Sew patches on with a fine needle, and keep them moderate in size. A 4" chest or sleeve patch sits well on a bomber; a very large, stiff back piece can pull at thin fabric.

Canvas work jackets

Duck canvas chore coats and work jackets are heavy and flat, perfect for a big logo patch or a name patch. Iron-on bonds to canvas, but for a jacket that sees job sites and weekly washes, sew it or add stitches around an ironed patch.

Varsity jackets

The wool body and leather sleeves of a varsity jacket both call for sew-on. Embroidered patches add the sport, graduation year, mascot or a name to the sleeve or chest.

Puffers, softshells and rain jackets

Quilted and waterproof jackets are the reason many people choose a patch over direct embroidery: stitching a design into insulation flattens it and punctures waterproof fabric. A PVC patch handles rain best, and a hook-and-loop patch on a jacket that already has a loop panel can be pulled off before washing.

Want to understand what goes into the patch itself, from the stitch file to the finished edge? Our guide to making your own jacket patch walks through every step.

Personalized Back Pieces and Large Jacket Patches

A back piece is the statement patch. Most land between 8" and 12" wide, centered between the shoulder blades with the top edge a couple of inches below the collar seam. Measure the flat area across the back of your jacket at its widest, and leave at least an inch of room on each side of the patch.

Big patches carry personal designs well: a family name in script, a band or club crest, a memorial piece, a hometown skyline or your own artwork. Because a back piece has room, it can hold more detail than a chest patch, but the rules for thread still apply. Bold shapes read from across a room; tiny text and gradients don't.

A few things change at large sizes:

  • Stiffness. A 12" patch at full thread coverage is dense and heavy. On a light jacket, 50% to 75% coverage lets the base twill show and keeps the patch flexible.
  • Attachment. Iron-on alone won't hold a large patch through years of wear. Sew it, or iron it and then stitch the edge.
  • Shape. A clean outline, like a circle, shield or rectangle, takes a raised merrowed border. A detailed silhouette gets a heat-cut edge that follows the design.

Motorcycle clubs follow their own layout: a center patch with a top rocker and a bottom rocker, sewn onto a leather or denim vest. Our biker back patches and rockers page covers that format, from rocker curves to club colors.

Patching Work and Team Jackets With a Branded Logo

For a company, a crew or a team, patches solve a real problem. Direct embroidery has to be done jacket by jacket at the time of the order. A stack of logo patches can sit on a shelf and be sewn onto jackets as new people join, onto any brand or style of jacket, including puffers and heavy canvas that are hard to embroider.

Common setups for branded jackets:

  • Chest logo plus name: a 3" to 3.5" logo patch on one side of the chest and a personalized name patch on the other.
  • Back logo: a large logo patch for crews who work facing away from customers, like landscapers, movers and event staff.
  • Sleeve patch: a 3" to 4" patch on the upper sleeve for a team crest or a secondary mark.

Sometimes direct stitching is the better fit. If you're ordering new jackets anyway, we can stitch the logo right into the fabric; see our embroidered jacket backs and chest logos. Crews who live in hoodies more than jackets can get the same logo on Custom Hoodies, Designed Your Way, so the whole team matches whatever the weather does.

Embroidered, PVC or Leather for Outerwear

Embroidered PVC Leather
Look Raised thread texture Smooth molded rubber Pressed or engraved mark
Best on Denim, canvas, leather, bombers, varsity Rain shells, softshells, tactical jackets Denim, canvas, leather
Detail Bold art and lettering about 1/4" and up Fine lines and small text Simple logos and wordmarks
Weather Washable Waterproof, won't fray Water-resistant; don't soak
Attachment Sew-on, iron-on or hook Sew-on or hook Sew-on

Embroidered patches are the classic choice for most jackets and the most economical in small numbers. PVC is the one to pick for jackets that live outdoors or get wet, since it doesn't absorb water. Leather patches suit heritage styles, especially on denim and waxed or duck canvas.

Iron-On vs. Sew-On on Heavy Fabrics

When iron-on works

Iron-on patches have heat-activated adhesive on the back. They bond well to cotton denim, canvas and cotton-poly twill. To apply one:

  1. Set the iron to the cotton setting with steam off.
  2. Place the patch, cover it with a thin pressing cloth, and press firmly for about 30 seconds without sliding the iron.
  3. Turn the jacket inside out and press the back of the area the same way.
  4. Let it cool completely before you move or flex the fabric.

For jackets that get washed often, add a few stitches around the edge. Our iron-on jacket patches page covers the backing in more detail.

When to sew

Sew-on is the only safe choice for leather, suede, nylon, satin, polyester shells, waterproof fabrics and fleece. It's also the most permanent option on any jacket.

On denim, a chest-size patch takes about 20 minutes to sew by hand. Use polyester thread that matches the border, a sturdy needle and a thimble. Slip a piece of cardboard inside the jacket so you don't stitch through both layers, then sew small stitches just inside the merrowed edge, about 1/8" apart, all the way around. For leather, use a leather needle or take it to a tailor or shoe repair shop.

Chest, Sleeve, Back or Collar: Where Jacket Patches Go

Placement Typical size Notes
Left or right chest 3"–4" wide Logo, crest or name patch
Small chest badge 2"–2.5" Good for clustering several patches
Upper sleeve 3"–4" Top edge about 1/2" to 1" below the shoulder seam
Forearm or cuff 1" x 4" strip or 2" badge Names, dates, small marks
Collar or lapel 1.5"–2" Small accent patches on denim
Upper back 4" x 10" banner Names or a top rocker style
Full back 8"–12" wide Statement piece

Lay custom jacket patches out on the jacket before you attach anything. Painter's tape holds them in place for a photo, and the photo shows you how the layout looks from a few feet away.

Ordering: Mockups, Fees and Timing

Send your art, a photo or a sketch, and tell us the jacket and placement. Every design is previewed before production: in our 3D Custom Designer, or, for bulk orders of 100+ pieces, on a free mockup that shows size, colors, border and backing. Embroidered designs carry a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design. The stitch file is then downloadable in your account. Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup. That includes the same design in another size.

There's no minimum on embroidered patches, so one personalized patch for one jacket is fine. Your schedule starts when you approve the mockup; if you need patches for a birthday, a rally or a team event, include the date. Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order; tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve. We ship anywhere in the US, and Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our Orlando-area warehouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can iron-on patches go on a leather jacket?

No. An iron hot enough to melt patch adhesive will scorch or shrink leather, and the glue won't grip its surface anyway. Sew patches onto leather by hand with a leather needle, or have a tailor or shoe repair shop do it. Order sew-on backing for leather so there's no adhesive layer making the patch stiff.

What size patch fits a jacket back?

Most back pieces are 8" to 12" wide. Measure the flat area across the back at its widest and leave about an inch of space on each side. Lighter jackets and smaller frames suit 8" to 10"; heavy denim and adult-size work jackets carry 10" to 12". For large custom patches for jackets, sew them on rather than relying on adhesive.

Should I sew patches onto denim?

You don't have to, since iron-on bonds well to denim. But sewing is more permanent, and it's the better choice for back pieces and jackets you wash often. A good middle ground is to iron the patch on to hold it in place, then stitch around the edge with polyester thread to lock it down.

Can you attach the patches for me?

Not on jackets you already own. We decorate the blanks we supply and don't work on customer-supplied garments. Your patches arrive ready to iron or sew, and any tailor or alterations shop can attach them. If you're buying new jackets, we carry denim, canvas and soft-shell styles and can sew your patches on or embroider your design straight onto them.

How many patches can one jacket take?

As many as fit flat. A denim jacket can carry a full back piece plus a dozen or more small patches on the chest, sleeves and collar. Leave a little space between patches so the jacket still bends, and keep patches off seams, pockets that open, and the inside of the elbow, where fabric folds constantly.

Is there a minimum order for jacket patches?

Not for embroidered patches (PVC and leather minimums vary by type). You can order a single personalized embroidered patch for your own jacket, a set of different designs for one jacket, or a hundred for a club. Each embroidered design carries a one-time $35 digitizing fee, never charged again for reorders or other sizes, and the per-patch price drops as quantity goes up.

What file should I send for a jacket patch?

SVG or PDF files give the cleanest result, and AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote. A high-resolution PNG or JPG works too, and so does a sketch or a photo of an old patch. Tell us the jacket and where the patch goes, and we'll size the design. Preview it in our 3D Custom Designer, with a free mockup on 100+ pieces.
