Knit Sweaters vs. Sweatshirts: What's the Difference?

A sweater is knitted from yarn, so you can see the stitches, feel the texture and watch it drape. A sweatshirt is made from fleece, a smooth knit fabric with a brushed or looped inside. Sweaters read dressier and work over a collared shirt or under a blazer; sweatshirts read casual.

That difference changes how we decorate. Sweatshirts take prints and embroidery equally well. Knit sweaters are best embroidered, because ink doesn't sit cleanly on a textured, stretchy surface. If you want a big printed graphic, our fleece sweatshirts are the better canvas, and our embroidered fleece sweatshirts give you a stitched look at a more casual level.

Embroidered Knit Sweaters With Your Logo

A small stitched logo on a fine knit is one of the most understated branded looks you can give a team. The left chest is the default spot, usually 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide on knitwear, a touch smaller than on a sweatshirt so it sits neatly on the finer surface.

Custom sweater embroidery on knits takes a different setup than fleece:

  • Water-soluble topping sits on top of the knit during stitching so thread doesn't sink between the loops. It rinses away afterward.
  • Soft backing stabilizes the knit from behind so the design doesn't pull, pucker or stretch.
  • Ballpoint needles slip between yarns instead of piercing them, which helps prevent snags and holes.
  • Lighter stitch density keeps the design flexible, so it moves with the sweater instead of sitting on it like a stiff badge.

Every new design is digitized once for a one-time $35 fee, and the file is downloadable from your account afterward. For more on how we handle fine fabrics, read about embroidery on delicate knits.

Cardigans, V-Necks, Turtlenecks and Sweater Vests

Different styles call for different placements:

  • Crew and V-neck pullovers: left chest is classic; a small mark on the cuff or near the hem is a quieter option.
  • Cardigans: the logo goes on the chest panel opposite the buttons, or on the button side if the placket leaves enough flat space. A custom cardigan sweater with a tonal logo is a favorite for front-desk and hospitality staff.
  • Turtlenecks and mock necks: left chest or cuff, kept small so it doesn't fight the collar.
  • Sweater vests: left chest, sized for a school crest, club logo or initials. Vests are a staple of school and club uniforms.

Cashmere, Wool and Cable Knit for Premium Gifting

Premium fibers make premium gifts, and each behaves a little differently under the needle:

  • Cashmere and merino wool: soft and fine-gauge, so they hold small, crisp embroidery beautifully. Tonal thread (a shade close to the sweater color) looks especially refined.
  • Cotton knits: sturdy and easy to care for, and a good choice for warm climates like Central Florida, where a lighter sweater gets more wear.
  • Cable knits: the raised cables make an uneven surface, so we place embroidery on a flat panel, usually the chest or a smooth area beside the cables.

Knit gauge matters too. Fine-gauge knits (tightly knitted, smooth) hold more detail; chunky knits suit bold, simple shapes and slightly larger lettering. We carry knit sweaters, cardigans and sweater vests, and each product lists its fiber content. For help comparing quality and weights, see our premium blank buying guide.

Branded Sweaters for Corporate Gifts and Uniforms

A branded knit sweater says more than a logo mug ever will. Companies use them for client and holiday gifts, executive and sales team wear, hospitality uniforms, real estate and financial offices, private schools and country clubs. Orlando's hotels, restaurants and event venues are a natural fit: a knit with a tonal logo looks sharp at the front desk and stays comfortable in heavy air conditioning.

Tips for a corporate order:

  • Go tonal or one-color for an understated, premium look.
  • Collect names and sizes early, especially for mixed men's and women's cuts.
  • Mix styles under one logo. The same digitized file works across pullovers, cardigans and our quarter-zip sweaters for employees.
  • Add a personalized touch with each recipient's initials on the cuff.

Monogramming Knitwear: A Personalized Gift That Lasts

A personalized monogrammed sweater is a gift people keep for years. The classic three-letter format puts the last initial larger in the center, flanked by the first and middle initials. Single initials, a short name or a meaningful year work well too.

On knits, keep letters at least about 3/8 inch tall so they don't sink into the texture, and choose block or simple script fonts over very thin, ornate ones. Popular placements are the left chest, the left cuff and just above the hem on the left side. Thread can match the sweater for subtlety or contrast for a classic preppy look.

Knitted-In Patterns vs. Embroidered Designs

Some companies knit a design directly into the fabric using a jacquard knitting machine. The pattern becomes part of the sweater, but it's drawn on a stitch grid, usually limited to a few yarn colors, and it can't reproduce fine detail or photos. It's a manufacturing process, often with its own minimums and lead times.

We don't knit designs into sweaters. We embroider them onto quality knitwear. That means no minimum, more thread colors, crisp small logos and lettering, and the option to add a name to each piece. For most logos and monograms, embroidery is the more flexible choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do custom embroidered sweaters cost?

The price depends on the sweater itself (fiber, weight and brand), the stitch count of your design, the number of locations and the quantity. The only setup cost is a one-time $35 digitizing fee per logo or artwork design (monograms are $10 each instead), which you won't pay again for reorders. Design it in our 3D Custom Designer, or request a bulk quote for 100+ pieces and we'll quote your exact order.

Can you embroider a knit sweater without snagging it?

Yes. We use water-soluble topping so stitches don't sink into the knit, soft backing to keep the fabric stable, ballpoint needles that slip between yarns, and lighter stitch density so the design stays flexible. On cable or chunky knits, we place the design on a flat area for the cleanest result.

Are branded sweaters good corporate gifts?

Yes. A knit sweater with a small tonal logo is a gift people actually wear, which keeps your brand in sight for years instead of days. They suit client thank-yous, holiday gifts and staff uniforms, and adding each recipient's initials to the cuff makes the gift personal without changing the logo.

Is there a minimum on custom knit sweaters?

No. You can order a single sweater. The one-time $35 digitizing fee applies per logo design, not per piece, so it's the same whether you order one logo sweater or fifty; monograms are $10 each, with no digitizing fee. Once the $35 fee is paid, the digitized file is downloadable from your account and ready for reorders.

Can you knit my design into the sweater?

No. Knitting a design into the fabric is done by knitwear manufacturers on jacquard machines, usually with color limits and minimums. We embroider your logo, monogram or artwork onto finished knit sweaters, which allows single pieces, fine lettering and more thread colors. For an all-over knit-look pattern, a large DTF print on a fleece sweatshirt is the closest option we offer.
