A reunion shirt has two jobs: it has to look great in the group photo, and it has to be something people wear again. Everything below is built around both. Shopping for Father's Day, the grandparents or an everyday matching set instead? Browse our custom family shirts.
Family Reunion Shirt Ideas Everyone Will Wear
The designs that get worn long after the cookout keep the front clean and put the story on the back. Start with three facts, then add one personal touch.
Family name, year and place
The classic layout is the family name in big letters, "Reunion" and the year underneath, and the city or park on a smaller line. Add "Est." with the year the founding couple married, and the shirt reads like a crest. Funny lines belong on the back: "I Survived the Walker Family Reunion", "Here for the Food" or "Ask Me About the Group Chat". Holding the reunion at the shore? Our family vacation shirts have more beach-week ideas.
Family trees and crests
A tree with the founding grandparents at the roots and each of their children as a branch gives everyone a place to find themselves. Keep it legible: one name per branch reads from a few feet away, while every grandchild's name squeezed in turns to texture. A crest works the same way, with the surname, the founding year and a simple emblem. Upload SVG or PDF (best) or a high-resolution PNG or JPG; AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote.
Heritage colors and patterns
Heritage details make a shirt feel like yours: kente-inspired stripes, the colors of a home country's flag, a clan tartan, or a pattern taken from Grandma's quilt. Bilingual designs are welcome too, such as "Reunión Familiar" under the family name, with the accents spelled correctly. Keep the artwork original, though: sports-team, college and brand logos can't go on reunion shirts, even as a joke.
Names on the Back: Personalizing Every Shirt
One design, a different name per shirt
The shared design stays the same on every shirt, and each person's first name goes across the shoulders. Printed names are added shirt by shirt with DTF, which has no setup fee, so a list of 80 names adds nothing to setup. Send one list with each name and size, and check the spelling twice, because that list becomes the production sheet.
Embroidered names are priced differently: each embroidered name is $10 per item. That makes embroidery the right call for one crest on the elders' polos, and printed names the right call for a personalized shirt for everyone else.
Branch, generation or role lines
A second line under the name tells everyone how they fit in: "Grandma Ruth's Branch", "Generation 3", "Original Grandkid", "Grill Master" or "Family Historian". For the founding couple, list every child's name down the back; it's the one shirt where multiple names belong.
Honoring Elders and Ancestors With a Photo
A photo of the founding grandparents, or of relatives who have passed, turns a reunion shirt into a keepsake. Put the photo on the back with their names and years, or add a small "In Loving Memory" panel under the main design. Full-color photos print best with DTF, which handles skin tones and soft shading better than a standard spot-color screen print. See more layouts in our shirts with your own photo.
Photo quality decides how the print turns out:
- Scan old prints on a flatbed scanner at 600 dpi rather than photographing them with a phone, which adds glare and blur.
- Aim for 300 dpi at the printed size. Our 3D Custom Designer blocks print art below 150 PPI, so a photo that's too small is flagged before you order.
- Send the original file, not a screenshot or an image saved from social media, which has already been compressed.
- Crop to faces for small placements; a group photo of 20 people turns into dots on a chest print.
Color-Coding by Branch or Generation
Giving each branch its own shirt color makes a big group easy to read: each of Grandma's children gets a color, and everyone in that line wears it. It also makes the group photo simple to arrange.
- Pick the colors before you collect sizes, so the order form can show each branch its color.
- Choose an ink that works on every shirt. Screen-printing setup is per ink color, not per shirt color, so a white print across five dark shirt colors pays setup for one ink. The white underbase on dark garments is included.
- Mixing light and dark shirts? A white print won't show on pale yellow, and a dark ink for the light shirts adds one more screen color, so keeping every branch in dark or bright colors saves that setup.
- Mark the generations instead if the branches get complicated: one color for the elders, one for their children, one for the grandkids.
For a summer cookout, custom tie dye shirts give each branch its own swirl under the same print.
Sizes for Every Generation, Baby to 5XL
One reunion can run from a newborn to a great-grandfather, and so can one order: infant bodysuits, toddler and youth tees, women's fitted cuts, and adult sizes from S to 5XL, including tall lengths. Our youth and toddler tees are cut for smaller frames, and the design is scaled to sit in proportion on each size. Setup fees are one-time per design, so resizing it for the little ones never adds setup.
Fabric matters at a July reunion. A lightweight ringspun cotton or a cotton-poly blend breathes better than a heavy 6 oz cotton tee in the afternoon sun, and light shirt colors stay cooler than black. For a fall reunion or a cabin weekend, matching family hoodies and sweatshirts carry the same design into the evening. Polos with an embroidered family crest suit the elders' table, and embroidered caps keep the sun off the grill crew. Each item is either embroidered or printed, so decide which pieces get which.
To keep a reunion shirt looking new for the next one, wash it inside out in cold water and tumble dry low or hang it to dry.
Collecting Sizes and Paying for the Shirts
The hardest part of reunion shirts is usually the spreadsheet, not the design. One organizer, one list and one deadline keep the order clean.
Order forms and deadlines
A family reunion t-shirt order form needs only a few columns: the name for the back, branch or color, style (tee, youth tee, hoodie), size, and paid or not. Share it as an online form or a shared spreadsheet, set a firm cutoff date well ahead of your in-hand date, and send one reminder. Add a few spares in the most common adult sizes for the cousins who RSVP late.
Pricing shirts to cover the reunion budget
A simple approach: charge one flat price per shirt that covers the garment, its share of setup and shipping, and a little toward the reunion itself. Add up the order total, divide by the number of shirts, then round up. If the reunion needs $300 for the pavilion and 100 relatives buy shirts, adding $3 to each covers it. If a family-run business is helping pay for the day, a small branded logo on the sleeve is a good way to say thanks. Our guide to fundraiser apparel ideas has more on pricing shirts to raise money.
Ordering Early and Keeping Costs Down
Order once the headcount is roughly known, and tell us your in-hand date when you order; we'll confirm it before you approve. If plans come together late, rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order. Every design is previewed before production: live in our 3D Custom Designer, and bulk orders of 100+ items get a free mockup with unlimited revisions from our team. Reunions of 100 or more pieces can request a bulk quote for a dedicated account manager and our best volume pricing. Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our warehouse, or we'll ship anywhere in the US.
Screen printing for one shared design
For a big order of 100+ shirts with one shared design, screen printing usually gives the best price per shirt. Setup is quoted with your order and charged once per design, so it shrinks per shirt as the run grows. Screen printing is ordered through a bulk quote or by email at help@bizzystitchn.com rather than in the designer, and names can still go on the back with DTF. Fewer ink colors, one print location and one or two shirt colors keep the total down, and our budget-friendly bulk tees group the lowest-cost blanks.
Reorders for the next reunion
Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup. That makes the next reunion cheaper, with one catch: a new year is a design change. To skip new setup next time, keep the year out of the screen-printed artwork and print it with DTF alongside the names. Embroidered designs are saved in your account as "My Assets", so the family crest on next year's polos is never charged again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much are family reunion shirts?
It depends on the garment, the quantity, the number of print locations and the decoration method; live garment prices are on each product page. Setup is the part you can plan: DTF has no setup fee, embroidery is a one-time $35 per logo or artwork design, and screen printing on 100+ shirts has its setup quoted once per design.
How far ahead should we order family reunion shirts?
Order as soon as the date is set and the headcount is roughly known, and give the family a firm size deadline so late replies don't hold up the order. Tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve. If plans come together late, rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order.
Can every shirt have a different name?
Yes. Names are printed shirt by shirt with DTF, which has no setup fee, on top of the shared design. Send one list with each name and size. If you'd rather embroider names, each embroidered name is $10 per item, so printed names are the budget-friendly choice for a big family.
Can we mix colors and styles in one order?
Yes. A different shirt color for each branch, youth and adult sizes, hoodies, polos and caps can all share one design and one order, and the same design on other products never pays setup again. Each item is either embroidered or printed, and caps can be embroidered or DTF printed.
How do we collect sizes from the whole family?
Use one online form or shared spreadsheet with columns for the name on the back, branch color, style, size and payment. Set a cutoff date well ahead of your in-hand date, send one reminder, and add a few spares in common adult sizes. One organizer placing one order keeps everything on a single design approval.
Can we reorder the same design for the next reunion?
Yes, and setup is never charged again for the same design, on any product or size. Only a changed design needs new setup, and a new year counts as a change. Print the year with DTF, which has no setup fee, and the rest of the design can be reordered exactly as it is.
Is there a minimum order for custom family reunion shirts?
No. One shirt is fine, so a relative who missed the deadline can order later. Reunions ordering 100 or more pieces can request a bulk quote for a dedicated account manager, a free mockup with unlimited revisions and our best volume pricing. Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our warehouse, or we'll ship anywhere in the US.
