Race Shirts for 5Ks, Fun Runs and Charity Walks
Race shirts are a specialized corner of our custom event shirts. They're handed out by the hundred, sized from a registration list and worn on training runs for years, which keeps your event and your sponsors in view long after race day.
Participant shirts for race packets
The race-packet shirt carries the event name, the year and the cause on the front, with sponsors on the back. Keep the front bold and simple so it reads in course photos; one or two ink colors on a bright or heather shirt prints cleanly and keeps setup low. For a race that repeats every year, a steady logo with only the year changing makes the shirts collectible.
Finisher and volunteer shirts
A separate finisher shirt, handed out at the line in a different color or with "Finisher" across the back, rewards everyone who completes the course; small events can even have each one personalized with the runner's name, printed with DTF at no setup fee. Embroidered running hats and visors make a finisher gift or age-group award that gets worn on the next run. Volunteers belong in a third color, covered below.
Performance or Cotton: Choosing the Shirt
Performance polyester, usually around 3.5 to 4.5 oz, is light, dries fast and is sold by its makers as moisture-wicking, which runners notice on a humid morning. Cotton and soft blends cost less, feel familiar and get worn more as everyday shirts, which suits walkers, fun runs and post-race wear. Tri-blends sit in between.
Our performance running tees cover the polyester side. On any race shirt, keep ink coverage reasonable: a huge solid print sits on the fabric like a patch and blocks airflow, while outline graphics and distressed textures breathe better. Some races give runners a performance tee and walkers or kids a cotton one, with the same design on both and no extra setup.
Sponsor Logos on the Back
A sponsor back gives local businesses a branded spot on every runner and can help cover the cost of race shirts, and screen printing handles it well. On race orders of 100+ shirts, print the whole grid in one ink color and it's a single screen setup, however many logos it holds. Ask every sponsor for a logo file they own, ideally SVG or PDF, and set a logo deadline before your size cutoff.
Laying out a sponsor grid
Put the title sponsor largest, under the race logo or across the top, then give each sponsor tier its own row of equal-sized boxes. Convert every logo to the one ink color, white on dark shirts or black on light ones, and have each sponsor approve that version. Leave space between logos: a dozen readable logos beat thirty tiny ones.
How shirt sponsorship works
The organizer sells logo spots on the race shirt as part of each sponsorship package, with tiers set by logo size and position. Agree on what each tier gets before you sell it, so the layout isn't a negotiation at the deadline. The money can go toward shirts and other race costs; for more ways to raise funds with apparel, see our fundraiser apparel ideas.
Team Shirts for Charity and Awareness Walks
Walk teams want shirts that say who they're walking for. Put your branded team logo or name on the front and "Walking for" or "In memory of" with names on the back, and give survivors a different shirt color. A photo of the person you're honoring prints in full-color DTF printing, which has no setup fee, so each shirt can carry a different personalized name. Small teams can design and preview their shirts live in our 3D Custom Designer.
Cancer walks, autism awareness walks and other cause walks look best in the cause's colors, and a generic ribbon icon is fine. The names and logos of organized walks belong to their organizers, so get permission before putting them on your team shirts.
School Fun Run and Turkey Trot Shirts
School fun runs and walk-a-thons need youth sizes and colors you can count. Give each grade its own shirt color, and consider a student design contest: the winning drawing can print full color with DTF, or be simplified to one or two colors for screen printing.
Holiday races follow the season. A Turkey Trot shirt in fall colors, a Christmas 5K in red and green and a Halloween run with a costume theme all work best with a playful front and the year on the sleeve or back. Long sleeves suit cool mornings, and mud runs call for dark shirts with a simple one-color design.
Staff, Volunteer and Course Marshal Shirts
Staff, water-station crews and course marshals should never be mistaken for runners. Give them their own color with STAFF or COURSE MARSHAL in large letters on the back. Our volunteer crew shirts cover larger crews and sponsor backs, and hi-vis shirts suit marshals at road crossings and parking lots. A branded polo works well for the timing tent and the registration table.
Ordering Sizes and Quantities for Race Day
Collect shirt sizes at registration, set a size cutoff date and add every volunteer and staff member to the count. A small buffer in the middle adult sizes covers race-day sign-ups and size swaps, and youth sizes keep family runners in the same design. Every design is previewed before production: live in our 3D Custom Designer, and bulk orders of 100+ items get a free mockup with unlimited revisions from our team.
For race-packet orders of 100 or more, request a bulk quote to get a dedicated account manager, that mockup and our best volume pricing. Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup, so a new year on the shirt counts as a new design.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do custom 5K shirts cost?
It depends on the shirt, the decoration method, the number of print locations and the quantity; live prices are on each product page. For screen printing on 100+ shirts, setup is quoted with your order and charged once per design, so a two-color front and a one-color sponsor back cost pennies a shirt across 200 shirts. DTF has no setup fee.
How many shirts should we order for a 5K?
Start with registered participants, add every volunteer and staff member, then add a small buffer in the middle adult sizes for race-day sign-ups and size swaps. Collect sizes at registration and set a cutoff date so the order matches the people who are coming. Spare shirts make a good thank-you for next year's volunteers.
Should race shirts be cotton or performance?
Performance polyester suits runners: it's light, dries fast and is sold as moisture-wicking, which helps on hot, humid mornings. Cotton and soft blends suit walkers and fun runs and get worn more as everyday shirts. You can also offer both, printing the same design on a performance tee for runners and a cotton tee for walkers.
Can sponsor logos go on the back?
Yes. A sponsor grid on the back is the classic race layout. Each sponsor needs to supply a logo they own, ideally as an SVG or PDF. Printing the whole grid in one ink color keeps it to a single screen-printing setup on 100+ shirts and gives every logo the same weight. On a bulk quote, your free mockup shows the grid before printing.
What are good 5K shirt ideas?
Lead with the event name and year, then add one idea: the cause, a course map, a local landmark or a running pun. Holiday races lean on the season, such as a turkey for a Turkey Trot. Walk teams add the name of the person they're walking for. Keep sponsors on the back so the front stays clean.
Can we get youth sizes for a school fun run?
Yes. One design can run from youth sizes to adult 5XL in the same order, so students, teachers and parents match, and the same design on a youth size never pays setup again. A different shirt color for each grade makes classes easy to count on the course, without changing the artwork.
Can you rush race shirts?
Yes. Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order; tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve. Final artwork, sponsor logos and a complete size list all help. Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our warehouse, or we'll ship anywhere in the US.
