Custom Pet Clothes: Sizing, Fit and Pet-Portrait Gifts
Custom pet clothes are shirts, hoodies and sweaters sized for a dog or cat to wear, personalized with a name, a photo or a logo. We don't make or sell clothing for pets. What we do make is pet-portrait apparel for people: dog-face shirts with your pet's photo, embroidered custom dog sweatshirts and pet-portrait hoodies.
If you're shopping for pet clothing, this guide covers what to look for: sizing, fit and safety, design tips for names and logos, and gift ideas for pet parents. Any design you'd put on your pet's shirt can also go on yours, and you can preview it live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is made. Dog Shirts and Sweaters for Small Breeds: What to Look For
Apparel your pet actually wears runs from lightweight tees to cozy sweaters. Good pet-apparel makers list pet sizes on each product page, and one design can often run across several sizes, so two dogs in the same house can match.
Small breeds get the most wear out of clothing. Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Italian greyhounds and other short-coated dogs feel the chill in air-conditioned rooms and on winter mornings, which makes a soft sweater practical, not just cute. For Florida summers, custom t-shirts for dogs in thin cotton or a performance knit suit short outings; in real heat, skip clothing entirely.
How to measure your dog
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the number that matters most.
- Neck: measure where a collar sits, then add enough room for two fingers.
- Back length: measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
If your dog falls between sizes, size up for a deep chest or thick coat. Long-backed breeds such as dachshunds usually need the size that matches their length, not their weight.
Fit and safety
A good fit lets your pet walk, sit and lie down without the fabric pulling at the front legs. Keep decoration on the back panel, where it lies flat. Check that a harness still fits comfortably over or under the garment, and never leave clothing on an unsupervised pet.
Can You Match Your Dog? Owner-and-Pet Sets
Yes, and it's one of the easiest ideas to pull off: a hoodie for you with your dog's portrait on the front, and a shirt for your dog in the same color reading "Mini Me" or their name. We make the human half; for the dog's shirt, pick a pet-apparel maker that offers your color. Choose the same garment color for both and keep the design simple enough to read on a small back panel.
Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup. So the portrait on your sweatshirt can also go on your partner's tee without new setup.
Pet-Portrait Apparel for Humans
Plenty of pet parents would rather wear their pet than dress them, and this is what we make. Dog-face shirts put a photo of your dog front and center, dog sweatshirts suit cooler months, and pet-portrait hoodies carry a full-color photo on soft fleece.
Two methods do most of the work. DTF prints the photo itself in full color with no setup fee. Embroidery turns the portrait into a stitched illustration with a simplified, textured look; see our pet portrait embroidery options. A stitched portrait carries the one-time $35 digitizing fee per design, after which the file is downloadable from your account.
Cat Clothes and Cat-Lover Gear
Some cats tolerate clothing and many don't. Hairless breeds such as the Sphynx often appreciate a light shirt or sweater in air-conditioning, and a calm indoor cat may wear a soft tee for a photo. Measure the chest the same way you would for a small dog, choose the smallest pet size that fits, and take it off at the first sign of stress.
For most cat people, the better gift sits on the human: a tee with their cat's portrait, a sweatshirt listing every cat in the house, or a cap with a small embroidered silhouette.
Personalized Names and Logos on Pet Apparel
Names are the simplest upgrade. A pet's name across the back of a shirt, an adoption date ("Gotcha Day") or a short phrase works best in a bold, simple font about 1 to 2 inches tall on small pet sizes. Script fonts and fine detail get lost on a small garment, especially in thread.
Logos work the same way on custom pet apparel. A doggy daycare, trainer or rescue can put a branded logo on pet shirts for events, adoption days and social photos, and the same logo can go on staff apparel from us. For our apparel, send an SVG or PDF file if you have one; a high-resolution PNG or JPG is also accepted, and AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote.
What Makes a Great Personalized Gift for a Pet Parent?
The best gifts are specific. A sweatshirt with a late pet's portrait means more than a generic paw print, and a matching set for a new adoption tells a story. Good occasions include birthdays, adoption anniversaries, holidays and memorials.
Families with a new baby and a dog can pair a onesie showing the dog's name or face with a matching tee for a parent; our personalized baby gifts make that easy. For more themes, browse Clothing Design Ideas for Custom Apparel.
Groomers, Vets and Rescues: Branded Staff Apparel
Pet businesses need two kinds of apparel. Staff need polos, tees and caps with an embroidered logo that survive daily washing and plenty of fur, so pick darker colors and smooth fabrics that shed hair easily. Rescues and daycares often add pet-worn shirts reading "Adopt Me" or the business name for events; we don't make pet-worn pieces, but volunteer tees can carry the same message. Outfit your team with branded apparel for your business, with no minimum when you add a new hire.
Care tips
Lint-roll off pet hair, then wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener, and air dry or tumble on low. Don't iron directly over a print or embroidery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put my dog's face on a sweatshirt?
Yes. Send a clear photo and we can print your dog's face in full color with DTF, or turn it into an embroidered portrait. You'll preview your design live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is produced, so you can check the crop, size and placement first. Printed portraits have no setup fee.
Do you sell custom dog clothes for dogs?
No. We don't make or sell clothing for pets to wear. We make pet-portrait apparel for people instead: shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies with your dog's face, name or logo. If you're buying dog clothes elsewhere, measure your dog's chest behind the front legs first, since that measurement decides the fit for most breeds.
What photo works best for a pet portrait?
A sharp, well-lit photo taken at your pet's eye level, with the whole head in frame and no heavy filters. Use the original file from your phone rather than a screenshot or a social media download, which lose resolution. Natural daylight near a window shows true fur color best.
Can I order a single pet-portrait shirt?
Yes. There's no minimum, so one shirt with one dog's portrait is fine. Printed designs have no setup fee. Embroidered designs carry a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design, and setup is never charged again when you reorder or put the same design on another product.
