Personalized Pet Portrait Shirts From Your Photos
A photo shirt is only as good as the photo, and the method matters too. On cotton tees, DTG (which we don't offer) prints the image straight into the fibers, so fur texture, eye color and soft shadows come through with almost no feel on the fabric. We print with DTF, which works on any shirt color and lays down a thin, flexible film with bright color and crisp edges. DTF has no setup fee.
Most pet photos look best with the background removed, so your dog isn't framed by a rectangle of living-room carpet. Then think about contrast: a black lab on a black tee disappears, and a white poodle fades into a white shirt. Choose a shirt color that sets off the coat, or add a thin outline or a colored circle behind the portrait.
For people, places and other faces, our personalized photo tees work the same way.
Embroidered Line-Art Pet Shirts
Line art turns your dog into a simple outline of the face or silhouette, stitched in one or two thread colors. It's subtle enough for work, grown-up enough to wear anywhere, and thread outlasts the shirt. A left-chest portrait usually runs about 3 to 3.5 inches wide.
Thread can't reproduce every whisker, so we simplify the photo into clean lines and confirm it on your mockup. Small lettering needs to be at least about a quarter inch tall to stay legible. Embroidery carries a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design. Once it's paid you can download the file from your account, and reorders, or the same pup stitched on a sweatshirt later, skip the fee. Our embroidered pet portrait sweatshirts and custom dog hoodies carry the same idea into cooler weather.
Dog Names, Breeds and Gotcha Days
Text turns a pet shirt into a personalized one, and it needs no artwork at all. Ideas that work:
- Name and title: "Biscuit's Mom," "Dog Dad," or the dog's name in a varsity arch.
- Gotcha day: the adoption date under the portrait, a good gift on the anniversary.
- Breed pride: the breed name with an "Est." year, styled like a vintage logo.
- The whole pack: every dog in the house in a row, each with a name underneath.
Keep names at least an inch tall if they should read across a room. For more layouts and slogans, browse our popular t-shirt designs for custom apparel.
Memorial Shirts for Pets We've Lost
A memorial shirt keeps a dog close, and it's worth taking a little extra care. A portrait with the dog's name and years is the simplest and often the most meaningful design. Some families add a favorite phrase, a paw print or a small halo.
If your best photo is an old paper print, scan it at 600 dpi rather than photographing it with your phone; scanning avoids glare and keeps detail. Personalized matching shirts let everyone in the family wear the same tribute. Embroidery orders and orders with art clean-up get a proof to approve before production, and plain DTF print orders are approved in our 3D Custom Designer at checkout, so nothing is made until it feels right to you.
Shirts for Groomers, Vets and Rescues
Dog businesses need shirts that work as hard as the staff. Grooming salons, veterinary clinics, daycares and trainers use branded tees and polos with a logo on the chest and the business name on the back. Smooth, tightly knit fabrics shed dog hair more easily than fleece or textured knits, which matters at the grooming table.
Rescues get even more from shirts. Volunteer tees help adopters find someone to ask at events, and fundraiser shirts featuring alumni dogs sell well to supporters. For fundraiser runs of 100+ pieces, screen printing through our team has a one-time setup quoted with the order, so the cost per shirt drops as the order grows; for small batches, DTF has no setup fee. Branded shirts for the staff and portrait tees for the supporters can share one design.
Shirts for People, Not Pups: Matching Sets and the Dog-Wear Question
The shirts in this collection are made for people and feature your dog. We don't make apparel for pets to wear, but if you shop for a matching dog shirt elsewhere, here's how sizing works. To get the fit right, measure three things with a soft tape:
- Neck: around the base of the neck, where a collar sits.
- Chest girth: around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the most important number.
- Back length: from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Keep decoration on pet apparel small and light so it doesn't stiffen the fabric. For reunions and vacations where the whole family wears the same design, dog's portrait included, see our custom family shirts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put my dog's face on a shirt?
Yes. Upload a clear photo, and we'll prepare it for printing, usually with the background removed, then print it in full color with DTF. You can also choose embroidered line art for a subtler look. You'll see it live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is produced, so you can check the crop, size and colors.
Do you make custom dog shirts for small dogs to wear?
No. We make shirts for people that feature your dog, not apparel for pets to wear. If you shop for pet apparel elsewhere, measure your dog's neck, chest girth behind the front legs and back length, then compare those numbers with the maker's size chart. Simple names and small designs work best on pet apparel because they keep the fabric soft and comfortable.
Which photo works best for a pet portrait shirt?
A sharp, well-lit photo taken at your dog's eye level, with the face filling most of the frame and both eyes in focus. Natural daylight beats flash. Send the original file rather than a screenshot or a texted copy, which loses resolution. For a 10-inch-wide print, aim for an image about 3,000 pixels wide.
Can I order one pet shirt as a gift?
Absolutely. There's no minimum, so you can order a single shirt with one dog's portrait and name. DTF has no setup fee, which keeps a one-off gift affordable. Orders ship anywhere in the US, or Orlando-metro customers can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse. Cutting it close to a birthday? Rush orders are available, with the rush fee quoted with your order.
How do I wash a pet portrait shirt?
Turn it inside out, wash cold with similar colors and tumble dry low or hang to dry. Skip bleach and fabric softener, and never iron directly on the print. Embroidered line art is the toughest finish, but personalized photo prints also last for years with gentle care, especially memorial shirts you want to keep.
