Volunteer Shirts People Can Spot in a Crowd
A volunteer shirt has one job above all: when a guest needs help, they should find a volunteer in seconds. That comes down to shirt color, contrast and a word big enough to read across a parking lot. It's the same thinking behind our branded shirts for every group, but volunteers need it most, because they're the people everyone comes looking for. Serving with a church? Bright colors and a big VOLUNTEER back
Pick one shirt color nobody else at the event will be wearing. Safety green, bright orange, royal blue and red stand out outdoors; black, white and heather gray disappear in a crowd. Put VOLUNTEER, STAFF or ASK ME across the back in large block letters that fill most of the width, with your logo on the front. One ink color on the back keeps the type clean and the setup low.
Hi-vis for parking and road crews
Volunteers who direct traffic, run parking lots or work along a road need more than a bright tee. Hi-vis shirts in fluorescent yellow-green or orange help drivers see them sooner, and your logo still goes on the front and back. If your venue or permit requires a specific class of safety apparel, confirm which one before you order.
Nonprofit Apparel for Staff, Board and Supporters
Staff and board members represent the organization at galas, site visits and community meetings, so they need something a step up from an event tee. An embroidered polo or quarter-zip with a left-chest logo looks professional and lasts. Embroidery takes up to 6 thread colors per design area, and the $35 digitizing fee is one-time per design: the same logo on a cap or jacket later never pays it again.
Personalized names work differently: each embroidered name is $10 per item, so for a large staff, printed names on a tee cost less, because DTF has no setup fee. Supporters, meanwhile, want something they'll wear on weekends: a soft tee or hoodie with a clean, mission-focused design does more for awareness than a shirt crowded with text.
Fundraiser Shirts and Pre-Order Sales
Fundraiser shirts carry the least risk when the money comes in before the shirts are made. Share the design, set a price above your cost, collect orders and sizes by a deadline, then place one order. You carry no leftover stock, and the one-time setup spreads across every shirt sold. Leave the year off the design and the same shirt can sell again next season without new setup. Company Volunteer Day Shirts
Companies running a volunteer day often want two logos on one shirt: their own and the nonprofit's. Put the nonprofit's logo or the event name on the front and the company's branded mark smaller on the back, so the day stays about the cause. Get the nonprofit's OK before using its logo. A shirt color in the company's brand palette makes the team photo look intentional, and one coordinator collecting sizes through an internal sign-up keeps the order to a single list.
Sponsor Logos on the Back
Sponsors who help cover the cost of shirts get their logo on every volunteer's back. A clean grid puts the event name at the top, the lead sponsor larger underneath and the rest in even rows. Printing every logo in one ink color, usually white or black, keeps the grid tidy and the setup to a single color. Ask each sponsor for a logo file they own, in SVG or PDF if possible. Ordering in Bulk on a Nonprofit Budget
The price of a volunteer shirt depends on the blank, the decoration method, the number of print locations and the quantity. A value-priced cotton tee from our budget-friendly bulk tees, one shirt color for the whole crew and only the print locations you need keep it down. For orders of 100 or more, request a bulk quote to get a dedicated account manager, a free mockup with unlimited revisions and our best volume pricing. Smaller crews can design and preview their shirts live in our 3D Custom Designer.
Fewer ink colors, bigger savings
Screen printing is the usual method for a volunteer run of 100+ shirts. Each ink color needs its own screen, so setup, quoted with your order and charged once per design, grows with every color you add. On dark shirts the white underbase is included and never counts as an extra color. Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup.
Size runs for a mixed crew
Volunteer crews range from teenagers to retirees, so plan for youth sizes through 5XL in one order. Ask for sizes when people sign up instead of guessing, and order a few extras in the middle adult sizes for walk-up volunteers. Unisex tees fit most people; add women's fitted cuts if your volunteers ask for them.
Selling Nonprofit Merch
Nonprofit merch keeps supporters connected between events. Start small: one tee and one hoodie with a strong design, sold at events and through a pre-order link on your own website. Order quantities you're confident you'll sell, and reorder the sizes that run out. Our guide on how to sell your own shirts walks through buying inventory and selling it yourself. Interested in an online store for supporters? We don't run online stores yet, but we handle the order if your group sells the pieces itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a volunteer shirt say?
Keep the front simple and let the back do the work. Your logo or event name on the front, with VOLUNTEER, STAFF or ASK ME in large letters on the back, is the most readable setup. Add the year only if you won't reuse the shirt, and save mission statements for supporter shirts, where people have time to read them.
What color should volunteer shirts be?
Choose a bright color nobody else at the event will wear, such as safety green, orange, royal blue or red. Avoid black, white and heather gray, which blend into a crowd. Parking and roadside crews are safest in hi-vis yellow-green or orange. If different roles need to be spotted, give each role its own color with the same design.
Do you offer nonprofit pricing?
Our best volume pricing comes with a bulk quote for orders of 100 or more pieces, and it's open to every organization, along with a dedicated account manager and a free mockup with unlimited revisions. The biggest savings come from your choices: fewer ink colors, one shirt color, value-priced blanks and reorders, which never pay setup again.
Can nonprofits sell merchandise?
Yes, nonprofits commonly sell shirts and other merchandise to raise money and awareness. How the income and any sales tax are handled depends on your state and on how the sales relate to your mission, so check with your accountant before you start selling. Pre-order sales keep your upfront cost and leftover stock low.
Can you add sponsor logos to the back?
Yes. A sponsor grid on the back works well on volunteer and event shirts. Ask each sponsor for a logo file they own, ideally SVG or PDF. Printing every logo in one ink color keeps screen-printing setup to a single color on 100+ shirts and gives the grid an even look. On a bulk quote, your free mockup shows the layout first.
Is there a minimum order for custom volunteer shirts?
No. You can order one shirt for a new volunteer or hundreds for an event, and DTF printing has no setup fee for small runs. For 100 or more pieces, request a bulk quote to get a dedicated account manager, a free mockup with unlimited revisions and our best volume pricing.
How fast can we get volunteer shirts?
Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order; tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve.
