Custom Straw Hats: Patches, Shade and Sun Hat Options

Custom cap hooped on a multi-head embroidery machine while the logo is stitched

Custom straw hats are straw sun hats, such as lifeguard and wide-brim styles, decorated with a sewn-on leather, embroidered or PVC patch, since straw doesn't take direct embroidery or heat well. We don't sell straw hats. For branded or personalized sun protection, we decorate fabric hats instead: our bucket and boonie hats take direct embroidery, and outdoor and UV-protective caps can be embroidered or DTF-printed.

Straw hats give beach weddings, resort staff and outdoor crews real shade with a logo, a name or a date on the front. Below, we cover lifeguard, wide-brim and packable sun hats, the patches that suit straw, and how to plan hats for an event. For the styles we do decorate, browse more personalized hats.

Straw, Sun and Beach Hat Styles

Custom sun hats come in two families, and the difference decides how your design goes on. We decorate fabric sun hats; we don't carry straw.

Straw hats are woven from natural or paper straw. They breathe well, look right at the beach and carry a patch beautifully. The most common straw styles:

  • Lifeguard hats: a tall crown, a very wide brim and usually a chin cord. Practical on boats, docks and sandbars.
  • Wide-brim sun hats: a softer, floppier brim that suits beach weddings, garden parties and resort wear.

Fabric sun hats are cotton twill, canvas, nylon or polyester. They pack flat, handle sweat and rain better than straw, and UPF-rated styles add tested sun protection. Because they're fabric, they can take direct embroidery and some prints, not just patches.

Patches and Embroidery on Straw and Sun Hats

Straw doesn't take direct machine embroidery well. The needle cuts the woven fibers, and the design loses its shape as the weave shifts. Heat-applied adhesives are a poor match too, since straw scorches under a press and glue softens in a hot car. The dependable answer is a patch, sewn to the front of the crown or onto the hat's band.

Three kinds of patch suit straw:

  • Leather patches give a natural, debossed or engraved look that suits ranch, farm-stand and beach brands. See our leather patch hat styles, or order made-to-order leather patches on their own.
  • Embroidered patches carry colorful logos, names and dates with a stitched border.
  • PVC patches are bright, flexible and wipe clean, which makes them the pick for marinas, charter boats and anything that gets splashed.

On a curved straw crown, keep the patch about 3.5 inches wide or less so the edges don't lift. We don't sell straw hats or decorate hats you supply, but patches can also be hand-stitched onto a straw crown or band. Embroidered patches carry the one-time $35 digitizing fee per design. Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup.

Fabric sun hats open up more options: direct flat embroidery on cotton twill, a full-color DTF print on cotton or polyester, or a patch.

Personalized Hats for Beach Weddings and Bachelorettes

A matching set of sun hats is one of the easiest ways to make a beach wedding or bachelorette weekend look planned, and it gives everyone shade during long outdoor photos. We don't sell straw hats, but every idea below also works on bucket hats and caps.

Popular personalized ideas:

  • The couple's names or initials and the wedding date on a leather patch
  • A bridal-party set where each hat carries its wearer's name or role
  • A destination and year for the whole group, like a beach town and the date of the trip
  • A lighter color or a different patch for the bride so she stands out in photos

Send the list of names exactly as you want them spelled, and check each one before you approve. For more name-and-text options on caps, truckers and bucket hats, see our wedding party hats.

Resorts, Marinas and Landscaping Crews: Sun Hats With Your Logo

For businesses that work in the sun, a straw hat is part of the uniform. Branded hats make staff easy to spot and keep them comfortable through the afternoon heat.

  • Resorts and beach clubs: custom beach hats in wide-brim straw with a leather or embroidered logo patch for pool, cabana and activities staff.
  • Marinas and charter captains: lifeguard hats with a chin cord and a PVC patch that shrugs off spray.
  • Landscaping and farm crews: wide brims that shade the neck and ears, with a durable patch that survives daily wear.
  • Farm stands and markets: branded hats that double as merch at the register.

We don't supply straw hats, but the same logo can go on branded bucket hats, caps and shirts from us, so the crew looks consistent from the dock to the office.

Wide-Brim, Lifeguard and Packable Sun Hats

Shade depends on three things:

  1. Brim width. Sun-safety groups generally recommend a brim of at least 3 inches all the way around to shade the face, ears and neck. Lifeguard and wide-brim hats meet that easily; most caps and short-brim styles don't.
  2. Weave. Hold a straw hat up to the light. If you see pinpricks of sun through the crown, UV gets through too. Tighter weaves block more.
  3. Fabric rating. On fabric hats, a UPF 50+ rating means the material blocks about 98% of UV.

Packable fabric hats are the easiest to travel with, since straw creases when crushed in a bag. For a fabric option with a shorter, all-around brim, our bucket and boonie hats take direct embroidery.

Event Orders: Timing Straw Hats for the Big Day

Hats for an event need a little more planning than everyday caps, because the patches are made first and then sewn on. When you order bucket hats or caps from us for an event, these steps keep it on track.

  • Start early. Tell us your event date when you order. Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order; tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve.
  • Approve your design quickly. Production starts once you approve, so a fast reply keeps everything on schedule.
  • Order a sample. There's no minimum, so one hat lets you check the color, design size and fit before the full set.
  • Plan delivery. Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our warehouse for free, or we'll ship anywhere in the US, including straight to a destination venue or rental.

Care tips: wipe straw with a barely damp cloth, never soak it, and let it dry away from direct heat. Store hats crown-down or on a hook so the brim keeps its shape, and don't leave them in a hot car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you sell custom straw hats?

No. We don't sell straw hats, and we decorate only the hats we supply. For personalized sun protection, we embroider bucket and boonie hats, and we embroider or DTF-print caps, including outdoor and UV-protective styles.

Can you put a logo on a straw hat?

Yes, a logo can go on a straw hat. The cleanest method is a patch sewn to the front of the crown or the band. Leather, embroidered and PVC patches all suit straw, so you can match the look to a resort, a crew or a wedding. We don't sell straw hats, but we put logos on bucket hats and caps, and a bulk quote for 100+ pieces includes a free mockup.

Can straw hats be embroidered?

Not directly in most cases. A machine needle cuts woven straw and the design distorts as the weave shifts. Instead, your design is stitched onto an embroidered patch, which is then sewn onto the hat. Fabric sun hats in cotton twill or canvas can be embroidered directly.

Which sun hats give the most shade?

Lifeguard and wide-brim hats, with a brim of at least 3 inches all the way around, shade the face, ears and neck best. Choose a tight straw weave, or a fabric hat rated UPF 50+, which blocks about 98% of UV. Short-brim fedoras and caps shade far less.

How far ahead should I order hats for a beach wedding?

As early as you can, since patches are made before they're attached and each embroidered hat needs its proof approved. When you order from us, tell us your event date. Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order; tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve.

Can I pick up my order?

Yes. Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our warehouse for free, or we'll ship anywhere in the US.
