How Photo Printing Works on Fleece
A sweatshirt with a picture on it needs a print method that can reproduce thousands of colors and soft gradients. Three methods do it well, and the right one depends on the sweatshirt's fabric and color. We print photos with DTF.
| Method | How it works | Best sweatshirt | Feel | Setup fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTG (direct to garment) | Inkjet ink sprayed into the fibers | 100% cotton or cotton-rich fleece | Softest; ink sits in the fabric | Not offered by us (we print with DTF) |
| DTF (direct to film) | Printed on film, then heat-pressed on | Cotton, polyester, blends, darks | Smooth, flexible layer | None |
| Sublimation | Dye turns to gas and bonds with polyester | White or light 100% polyester | No feel at all | Not offered by us (we print with DTF) |
On dark sweatshirts, DTF (like DTG) lays down a white base under the photo so colors stay true. That base adds a slightly heavier feel, which is why a photo on a white or heather gray sweatshirt usually feels softest. Screen printing isn't a good fit for photos: every color needs its own screen, and shading has to be broken into halftone dots.
Most adult fronts take a photo up to about 12 inches wide, with the back offering a similar area. Sleeves suit small photos or names. Learn more about full-color photo printing, and if you want the same picture on another garment, we print photo t-shirts and picture hoodies the same way.
Face Sweatshirts for Boyfriends, Besties and Birthdays
Face sweatshirts are the funny side of photo gifts. A few layouts that never miss:
- One big face cut out from its background, centered on the chest
- A repeating pattern of the same face, tiled across the front
- A face with a caption, such as an inside joke, a nickname or a date
- A crew of faces for a bachelorette, a birthday trip or a friend group
A personalized sweatshirt with your face on it is a classic boyfriend gift, and it works just as well in reverse. For matching sets, browse our couples and best friend designs. For the holidays, the same idea becomes photo Christmas sweaters with faces on a festive background.
For cutouts, a clear photo with good light and a visible edge between hair and background gives the cleanest result. You'll see the cutout on your proof before anything prints.
Honoring Someone: Personalized Memorial and Family Photo Sweaters
A memorial sweatshirt gives family members something to wear together at a service, a celebration of life or a birthday that's hard to face. Most carry a photo with a name and dates, sometimes with a short phrase or a favorite saying. A soft, neutral garment color lets the photo lead, and matching in loving memory shirts can carry the same photo and wording. When the date is close, rush orders are available, and the rush fee is quoted with your order.
If the only copy of a photo is a print, scan it at 600 dpi rather than photographing it with your phone. A scan keeps far more of an older photo's detail, even when the print itself has faded. Family photo sweaters follow the same steps for reunions, anniversaries and milestone birthdays, with the whole family pictured on the front and names or a year on the back.
Lost a pet? Our pet photo sweatshirts are made for dogs and cats, printed from a photo or stitched as a portrait.
Stitched Line-Art Portraits From a Photo
Embroidery can't reproduce a photograph. Thread has no gradients, and fine shading turns to mush at stitch scale. What it does beautifully is line art: a photo simplified into clean outlines of a face, a couple or a pet, stitched in one or two thread colors.
This is also the answer if you want a real knit sweater with a picture on it. Ink doesn't sit well on the textured surface of a knit, but a line-art portrait stitched on the chest looks right at home. Common sizes are 3 to 4 inches on the left chest for a subtle keepsake, or 8 to 10 inches centered for a statement.
Every embroidered design is digitized once, for a one-time $35 fee. After that, the file is downloadable from your account, and reordering the same design later skips the fee, so a matching sweatshirt for a sibling next year costs nothing extra to set up.
Photo Sweatshirt Blankets
A sweatshirt blanket is a throw made from the same fleece as a sweatshirt, often with a smooth polyester face printed edge to edge and a soft back. Photo collages, family pictures and pet portraits are the usual designs, often around 50 by 60 inches. Many are printed by sublimation, which needs a polyester face to hold the dye; we don't offer sublimation. We carry sweatshirt blankets that we embroider or print with DTF, so the same photo can go on a throw as well as a crewneck.
Choosing a Picture That Prints Well
The photo matters more than anything else. A few rules that make the difference:
- Resolution: aim for 300 dpi at print size. A 12-inch-wide print needs about 3,600 pixels across. Below about half that, photos start to look soft.
- Send the original. Pick the photo straight from your camera roll. Screenshots and pictures forwarded through messaging apps or downloaded from social media are compressed and lose detail.
- Light and focus: daylight, eyes in focus, no heavy filters. Faces in deep shadow print darker than they look on screen.
- Crop with intent: in a group photo, each face may end up smaller than a coin on the sweatshirt. Crop tighter, or use fewer people.
- Ownership: professional portraits usually belong to the photographer, so ask for a print release before using them.

Care for Printed Photos
Wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or hang dry. Skip bleach and fabric softener, and never iron directly on the print. Treated that way, a photo print keeps its color and stays flexible far longer. For more styles and decoration methods, browse all of our branded crewnecks and sweatshirts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What resolution does my picture need to be?
Aim for 300 dpi at the size it will print. For a 12-inch-wide front print, that's about 3,600 pixels across; a recent phone's original photo is usually plenty. Screenshots and images saved from social media are often too small. If your file is borderline, we'll tell you before anything prints.
Can you print a photo on the front and back?
Yes. Front, back and sleeves can each carry a photo or text, such as a picture on the front and names or dates on the back. Each location adds to the price, but DTF has no setup fee, so adding a second location doesn't add a setup charge.
Will a printed photo crack or fade?
Not with normal care. DTG ink sits in the fibers and DTF uses a flexible film, so both bend with the fabric. Sublimation (not offered here) can't crack at all, because the dye becomes part of the polyester. Hot water, high dryer heat and fabric softener cause most wear, so wash inside out in cold and dry low.
Can you embroider a photo?
Not as a photograph, but as stitched art, yes. We simplify the picture into line art, digitize it for a one-time $35 fee, and stitch it in one or two thread colors. It suits faces, couples and pets, and it's the best way to put a picture on a knit sweater.
Do you make sweatshirt blankets with pictures?
Yes. We carry sweatshirt blankets and print photo collages and full-color pictures on them with DTF, or embroider a name or simple design. We don't offer edge-to-edge sublimation. You'll preview your design live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is printed. For a wearable gift, a custom photo sweatshirt uses the same pictures.
