Heavyweight, Defined: GSM, Ounces and Feel
Sweatshirt weight is listed two ways: ounces per square yard (oz) in the US, and grams per square meter (GSM) almost everywhere else. One ounce per square yard is about 34 GSM, so the numbers convert easily.
| Category | Ounces (oz/yd²) | GSM (approx.) | How it feels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightweight | 6 to 7 | 200 to 240 | Thin, drapey, good for layering |
| Midweight (standard) | 7.5 to 9 | 255 to 305 | The everyday sweatshirt |
| Heavyweight | 10 to 12 | 340 to 410 | Thick, warm, holds its shape |
| Extra heavyweight | 12 and up | 410 and up | Dense, boxy, streetwear feel |
Compare like with like. Some brands quote fabric weight before dyeing or washing, and a few quote the weight of the whole garment, so a 13 oz listing isn't always heavier than a 12 oz one. Feel also depends on yarn quality and how tightly the fleece is knit, not weight alone.
If you just need a reliable everyday pullover, our standard-weight sweatshirt options and classic crewnecks cost less and get more wear in Central Florida, where a heavyweight is mostly for winter nights, cold offices and trips up north. Super-Soft Fleece for Personalized Pieces
Weight and softness are different things. A sweatshirt feels soft because of the yarn and finish:
- Ringspun or combed cotton has smoother, finer fibers than standard open-end cotton, so the face feels silky instead of scratchy.
- Cotton-rich blends, such as 80/20 cotton-poly, feel softer than 50/50 while still resisting shrinkage.
- Brushed fleece has a napped, fuzzy inside for warmth; French terry has small loops inside and breathes better.
- Garment-washed or sueded finishes soften the fabric before it ever reaches you.
These soft blanks make the best personalized gifts: a name or initials embroidered on the chest, or a DTF print in full color. High-quality sweatshirts are worth it when the piece is meant to be worn for years.
Branded Carhartt Sweatshirts for Work Crews
Carhartt fleece is built for job sites: heavy rib-knit cuffs and waistband, sturdy seams and a fit that layers over a work shirt. It's a natural fit for contractors, landscapers, HVAC techs and field crews who want a branded sweatshirt that survives real work.
Most Carhartt styles carry the brand's own label on the front, so we place your logo where it doesn't overlap, usually the opposite side of the chest, the back or a sleeve. Embroidery is the classic choice, and a PVC or leather patch adds a rugged touch. We carry Carhartt sweatshirts, sold decorated only: pick the style and design it live in our 3D Custom Designer, and new hires can be added in the same style as the rest of the crew.
Nike Sweatshirts With Your Logo
Nike fleece gives company and team gear an athletic, recognizable look. The Swoosh usually sits small on the left chest, so your logo goes on the right chest, across the center or on the back. Embroidery looks sharpest next to Nike's own mark, and a tonal thread color keeps the pairing understated.
Branded Nike pieces work well as client gifts, sales team kits and coaching staff wear. We carry Nike fleece, sold decorated only: pick the style and see your logo beside the Swoosh live in our 3D Custom Designer, or request a bulk quote for 100+ pieces and get a free mockup before anything is stitched.
Oversized and Boxy Streetwear Fits
Streetwear sweatshirts are cut differently: dropped shoulders, a wider body, a slightly shorter length and a thick rib waistband that bunches just right. For oversized sweatshirts, either choose a blank cut boxy or size up one or two in a standard fit. Sizing up adds length as well as width, while a boxy cut keeps the hem high.
Independent brands and creators can start small, since there's no minimum. Classic streetwear layouts include a small chest hit with a large back print, sleeve hits, and a matching cap with a raised 3D puff wordmark. Build out the drop with heavyweight sweat sets and heavyweight tees in matching colors.
Premium Decoration for Premium Blanks
Thick fleece is a better canvas than thin fleece. It supports dense stitching without puckering and gives prints a smooth, stable surface.
- Embroidery: high stitch counts and tonal thread look their best on heavy fleece. See our premium embroidery finishes.
- Patches: leather and PVC patches suit heavyweights, and embroidered patches give a vintage, varsity look.
- Screen printing: bold, durable color for runs of 100+ of one design, through our team.
- DTG: detailed, soft prints on 100% cotton and cotton-rich heavyweights (not offered here; we print with DTF).
- DTF: full color on blends, polyester and dark colors.
The blank is the biggest price driver on this page, followed by decoration method, design size and quantity. Setup fees are one-time per design: $35 digitizing per embroidered design, nothing for DTF, and a quoted setup for screen printing on 100+ pieces. Reorders of the same design skip both fees. Live prices for each blank are on the product pages. Every design is previewed live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is produced, bulk orders of 100+ pieces get a free mockup from our team, and Orlando-metro customers can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse or have the order shipped anywhere in the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy soft custom sweatshirts?
Right here. Look for ringspun or combed cotton, a cotton-rich blend such as 80/20, and a brushed or garment-washed finish; each product lists its fabric content. Design it live in our 3D Custom Designer, then pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse if you're local, or have the order shipped anywhere in the US.
What weight counts as a heavyweight sweatshirt?
Around 10 oz per square yard (about 340 GSM) and up. Standard sweatshirts run about 7.5 to 9 oz, and premium streetwear blanks often reach 400 to 500 GSM. Check whether a brand quotes fabric weight or garment weight before comparing, since the two aren't the same number.
Can you embroider Carhartt sweatshirts?
Yes. We carry Carhartt sweatshirts, and their heavy fleece takes embroidery very well. We place your logo away from the brand's own label, usually on the opposite chest, the back or a sleeve. A PVC or leather patch is another rugged option. Pick the style and see the placement live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is stitched; Carhartt is sold decorated only.
Can I get Nike sweatshirts with my logo?
Yes. We carry Nike fleece. The Swoosh usually sits on the left chest, so your logo goes on the right chest, the center or the back. Embroidery suits Nike fleece best, and a tonal thread keeps the pairing understated. Pick the style and see both marks together live in our 3D Custom Designer, or request a bulk quote for 100+ pieces and get a free mockup. Nike is sold decorated only.
Do heavyweight sweatshirts shrink?
A little, depending on the blend. Pre-shrunk cotton-poly fleece barely moves, while 100% cotton and very cotton-rich heavyweights can shrink slightly, mostly in length. Wash a custom heavyweight sweatshirt inside out in cold water and tumble dry low or hang dry to keep the fit and the decoration looking new.
