Custom Morale Patches

Custom morale patches are where a team's sense of humor lives: the squad mascot, the call sign everyone uses, the inside joke only six people get. We offer them embroidered or in molded PVC, hook-backed and ready for plate carriers, packs, range bags and caps. Order one embroidered patch for yourself or a set for the whole team, approve a mockup first (free on bulk orders of 100+ pieces), or see our patch options overview.

What Morale Patches Are and Why Teams Love Them

Morale patches grew out of military units, where troops wore unofficial patches with a mascot, a motto or a joke that said something about who they were. The idea spread to law enforcement, fire and EMS, airsoft and paintball teams, shooting clubs, gyms, overlanders and collectors. Today plenty of people own a patch board long before they own a plate carrier.

What separates a morale patch from a tactical patch is the job it does. A tactical patch identifies: a name, a blood type, a unit, a flag. A morale patch expresses: humor, pride, a shared story. Many orders mix both, and both go on the same loop panels.

Popular themes include:

  • Mascots and animals: a squad's badger, a range's rattlesnake, a team's goat.
  • Slogans and in-jokes: a line from a training day that nobody has let go.
  • Call signs and nicknames: often with a small icon.
  • Patriotic and regional designs: flags, state outlines and local landmarks.
  • Milestones: a course completed, a deployment, a competition season.

Tactical ID, Call-Sign and Blood-Type Patches

Custom tactical patches put critical information where people can find it fast. The rule is readability first, style second.

  • Name and call-sign tapes: block capitals, about 1 inch tall by 3 to 5 inches long, high contrast against the twill.
  • Blood-type patches: large, bold type such as "O POS," often with an allergy line like "NKA" or "PCN ALLERGY." Keep it to two lines so it reads at arm's length.
  • Flag patches: about 2 by 3 inches, in full color or subdued tones, sized for standard loop panels.
  • Team and role patches: "MEDIC," "RANGE SAFETY," "K9" or a team logo for the back panel.

For ID patches that need to stay legible when wet or muddy, PVC is the stronger choice, since it holds small text crisply and doesn't soak up water.

Thread or PVC for Range and Field Use

Embroidered morale patches have the classic look: thread on a twill base with a merrowed or heat-cut border. They're lighter, have that collectible stitched texture, and handle bold mascots and short slogans well.

PVC is molded soft rubber with raised color layers. It's waterproof, won't fray, wipes clean after a muddy match, and holds fine lines and tiny text that thread can't. On a range day in a Florida summer, sweat and sun don't faze it. Browse our PVC morale patches for flat 2D and sculpted 3D options.

Squad and Airsoft Team Sets: One Design, Personalized per Member

Team sets are one of the best uses for morale patches. Pick one design, then give every member a personalized version with their own call sign, number or role underneath. Everyone matches, and everyone has their own.

There's no minimum per name, so a six-person squad can order six different patches. Send the names as a typed list, one per line, and check every spelling on your digital mockup before production. Airsoft and paintball teams often add a second patch for the season or a tournament, and units pair a morale design with their official unit and squadron patches.

Personalized patches also make good farewell and promotion gifts: a call sign for a pilot heading to a new squadron, a mascot for a retiring K9 handler or a "plank owner" patch for the first members of a new team.

Gun Shops, Gyms and Podcasts Selling Branded Morale Patches

Morale patches are some of the easiest merch to sell. They're light, cheap to ship, need no sizing, and collectors buy them in sets. Gun shops and ranges sell a store-logo patch at the counter. Gyms and CrossFit-style boxes sell event patches. Podcasts, YouTube channels and creators use limited drops that sell out and get traded.

For branded runs, a few things help:

  • Keep a design on file. Embroidered designs carry a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design. Once it's paid, the file is yours to download from your account, and reorders of the same design skip the fee.
  • Release in waves. Order a small first run to test demand, then reorder the designs that sell.
  • Pair patches with caps. Many buyers want somewhere to put them, and a cap with a loop panel is the natural add-on. We carry tactical caps for morale patches too, though without loop panels, so choose sew-on or heat-seal backing for those.

You need to own the design or have permission to use it. Movie logos, cartoon characters and other brands' marks belong to someone else, and we'll ask before stitching anything that looks like a protected design.

Custom Design Tips: Readable Text at 2 to 3 Inches

Most morale patches are 2 to 3 inches tall, which is less room than it looks on a screen. Design for that size:

  • Limit the words. Two lines of three or four words each is about the maximum at 2 by 3 inches.
  • Letters at least a quarter inch tall for embroidery. PVC can go a little smaller.
  • Bold outlines. A thick outline around a mascot reads from across the range; thin internal lines disappear in thread.
  • Fewer colors, more contrast. Four to six colors usually look cleaner than ten.
  • No gradients or photos. Shading becomes solid color blocks in thread and in PVC.
  • Pick a shape that fits the panel. Rectangles, circles, shields and cut-to-shape outlines all work; measure your loop panel first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are morale patches allowed on uniforms?

It depends on your unit's or agency's policy. Most allow them on personal gear, range bags, packs and off-duty items, and many restrict or ban them on the duty uniform. Some teams allow them on loop panels in training but not in public-facing roles. Check with your chain of command before wearing one on duty.

What size are most morale patches?

Most are 2 by 3 inches, which fits the standard loop panels on caps, sleeves and plate carriers. Round designs are usually 2.5 to 3 inches across, and blood-type or call-sign tapes run about 1 inch tall. Larger back-panel designs start around 3 by 5 inches. Measure your loop panel first so the patch sits inside it.

Do they come with hook backing?

Yes, hook backing is our standard for morale patches. The hook side is sewn to the back, so the patch presses onto any loop panel and swaps in seconds. Sew-on and iron-on are available if the patch is going on a jacket or a bag without a loop panel. Learn more about our hook-and-loop patch backing.

Can I order a small batch for my squad?

Yes. There's no minimum on embroidered patches, so you can order one patch or a set with a different call sign for each member. Preview your design first in our 3D Custom Designer, or get a free mockup with a bulk quote for 100+ pieces. Need them for a deployment, match or event date? Rush orders are available with the rush fee quoted with your order, and Orlando-metro teams can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse.

PVC or embroidered morale patch?

Choose PVC for small text, fine detail, sculpted 3D art and gear that sees rain, mud and sweat. Choose embroidered for the classic stitched look, bold mascots and short slogans, and for a lighter patch. Both take hook backing. If you're unsure, ask for custom morale patches in both versions on your mockup and compare.
