5 Panel vs. 6 Panel vs. 7 Panel Caps
The panel count describes how the crown is sewn together, and it changes both the look and how a logo sits.
| 5 panel (camper) | 6 panel (ball cap) | 7 panel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front | One seamless panel | Two panels with a center seam | One seamless panel |
| Crown | Shallow and flat-fronted | Low, mid or high profile | Rounder, slightly deeper |
| Structure | Unstructured or lightly structured | Structured or unstructured | Usually unstructured |
| Brim | Flat or slightly curved | Flat or pre-curved | Flat or slightly curved |
| Best for | Wide wordmarks, patches, prints | Centered logos, 3D puff | Wide logos, patches, outdoor looks |
5 panel. One large front panel, two side panels and two back panels. Most close with a nylon webbing strap and plastic clip, a slider or a leather strap. The shallow crown sits high and relaxed, which is why it's tied to skate, camp and trail style.
6 panel. The classic ball cap. If you want a tall structured front for bold 3D puff lettering, look at our snapback crown styles. For a soft, washed cotton cap with a small logo, our low-profile dad hats are the better fit.
7 panel. A seamless front like a 5 panel, but the sides and back are cut into more, narrower panels. That gives a rounder crown that fits a little deeper. Custom 7 panel hats suit outdoor and retro brands that want the camper look with a snugger fit.
Why a Seamless Front Panel Makes Logos Cleaner
On a six-panel cap, a seam runs straight down the middle of the front. Embroidery stitched across it can ride over a ridge, small letters can split at the seam, and a patch may not lie perfectly flat. A 5 panel removes that problem.
- Wide wordmarks fit. Front logos usually run about 3 to 4.5 inches wide. The shallow crown limits height to about 2 to 2.25 inches, so horizontal designs work best.
- Patches sit flat. A rectangular or badge-shaped patch lies evenly on one piece of fabric and looks deliberate, not stuck on.
- Prints look sharper. DTF and sublimation prints land on a smooth, flat surface with no seam to break up the art.
- Fine details survive. Thin lines and small type don't fall into a seam.
Plan for a small branded hit elsewhere, too: a side-panel icon or a short tagline on the back strap area adds polish without crowding the front.
Stitched Logos or Patches on a Camper Cap
Flat embroidery. The most durable choice and the default for branded camper caps. On nylon and other thin fabrics, the design is digitized at a lighter density with the right backing so the panel doesn't pucker. Each design has a one-time $35 digitizing fee, and the file is yours to download from your account.
3D puff embroidery. Raised foam lettering needs a firm front to hold its shape. It works on lightly structured 5 panels with a reinforced front; on very soft, unstructured nylon, flat embroidery or a patch looks better.
Patches. Three types suit a camper cap:
- Embroidered patches have a bordered, vintage badge look that pairs well with canvas and corduroy.
- PVC patches are smooth, flexible and wipe clean, a good match for nylon caps worn on the water or the trail.
- Leather patches are debossed or engraved for a rugged, premium feel on cotton and canvas.

Full-color printing. DTF handles gradients, illustrations and photos with no setup fee. Sublimation, which we don't offer, dyes artwork into light polyester panels, so there's nothing to feel.
The Camper Cap as Branded Merch for Skate and Outdoor Labels
The 5 panel became a streetwear staple because it looks less corporate than a standard ball cap. That makes it strong merch for:
- Skate and surf shops that want a shop logo people wear off the board
- Streetwear labels running small, limited drops
- Breweries, coffee roasters and food trucks selling caps at the counter
- Outfitters, kayak rentals and fishing guides who need a light, quick-drying staff hat for Florida sun
- Summer camps and youth programs, where the camper cap name is literal
- Bands and creators selling branded merch at shows and online
Personalized 5 panels work for groups, too: camp counselors with their names on the side, a bachelor party trip with everyone's nickname, or a family reunion set.
Nylon, Cotton and Corduroy Fabrics
| Fabric | Feel and look | Best decoration |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon or ripstop nylon | Light, quick-drying, slightly shiny | Flat embroidery, PVC patch, DTF |
| Cotton twill | Soft, matte, classic | Embroidery, any patch |
| Washed canvas | Sturdy, textured, outdoorsy | Leather or embroidered patch |
| Corduroy | Retro, textured ribs | Embroidered or leather patch, bold embroidery |
| Polyester performance | Wicking, light | Sublimation, DTF, embroidery |
Corduroy's ribs can swallow very fine stitching, so keep lettering bold or use a patch. In Florida heat, nylon and performance polyester stay the most comfortable for all-day outdoor wear.
Run Sizes and Lead Times for 5 Panels
No minimum. Order one personalized hat as a gift, one sample to check fit and color before a full run, or just a dozen for a small drop.
Setup is one-time per design. Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup. For example, the $35 digitizing fee spread over 12 hats is under $3 a hat, and over 48 hats it's under 75 cents. DTF printing has no setup fee at all.
Plan the drop date backward. Timing depends on quantity, decoration method, proof approval and blank stock. Tell us your launch or event date when you order, and we'll confirm the timeline with your mockup. Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order.
You can design it live in our 3D Custom Designer, or request a bulk quote for 100+ pieces and get a free mockup. Either way, you'll approve the design before anything is produced. Orlando-area customers can pick up finished orders at our warehouse, or we'll ship anywhere in the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 5 panel hat?
A 5 panel hat is a cap built from five pieces of fabric: one wide, seamless front panel, two side panels and two back panels. It usually has a shallow, unstructured crown, a flat or slightly curved brim and a strap closure. It's also called a camp cap or camper hat.
Why choose a 5 panel hat for a logo?
The single front panel has no center seam, so logos, patches and prints sit flat and read cleanly. Wide wordmarks and badge-style patches look especially good. For a deeper look at panel counts and hat styles explained, see our guide to choosing the best hat style.
What is a 7 panel hat?
A 7 panel hat keeps the seamless front of a 5 panel but divides the sides and back into more, narrower panels. The result is a rounder crown with a slightly deeper fit. It's popular with outdoor and retro brands and takes the same embroidery, patches and prints as a 5 panel.
Can 5 panel hats be embroidered?
Yes. Flat embroidery is the most popular decoration for custom 5 panel hats, and lightly structured fronts can take 3D puff embroidery. On thin nylon, we digitize at a lighter density so the panel doesn't pucker. The one-time $35 digitizing fee covers that design for every future order.
Do 5 panel hats fit like a normal cap?
They sit higher and shallower than most six-panel caps, with a relaxed fit. Most use an adjustable strap that fits roughly a 7 to 7 5/8 hat size, about 22 to 24 inches around. If you prefer a deeper fit, a 7 panel or a mid-profile ball cap is the better choice.
