Personalized Player Names and Numbers for Every Roster

Names and numbers are what turn a stack of matching shirts into a team. Standard sizes keep them readable from the bleachers and consistent across the roster:

Placement Typical size Notes
Back number 8–10 in. tall (6–8 in. on youth sizes) Sized so refs and scorekeepers can read it
Front or chest number 3–4 in. tall Often paired with a team logo or wordmark
Sleeve or shoulder number 3–3.5 in. tall Common on football, hockey and soccer tops
Player name 2–3 in. letters across the upper back Straight or arched above the number
Cap side number or initials About 1–1.5 in. tall Stitched initials or a printed number on team caps

Send your roster as a spreadsheet with each player's name exactly as it should appear, the number, the size and the cut (youth, adult or women's). Every piece is checked against that list, and you'll approve the design before anything is produced, either live in our 3D Custom Designer or, for 100+ pieces, on a free digital mockup from our team. Numbers and names are printed with DTF on tees and jerseys (screen printing on runs of 100+), and names can also be embroidered on polos and warm-ups; numbers are print only. Our custom team shirts collection covers the most popular jersey and tee styles.

Gear by Sport: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey and More

Each sport has its own uniform habits. Here's what most teams order:

  • Baseball and softball: crew or button-front jerseys, practice tees and team baseball caps with an embroidered front logo. 3D puff embroidery makes bold letters stand off a structured cap, and Richardson styles are a dugout favorite.
  • Basketball: lightweight polyester jerseys and shooting shirts for warm-ups, plus hoodies for travel days.
  • Football and flag football: practice tees that can take a beating, sideline hoodies and coaches' polos with an embroidered logo.
  • Hockey: rinks are cold, so team hoodies and team sweatshirts with the player number on the sleeve get as much wear as the game sweater.
  • Soccer, volleyball and tennis: moisture-wicking performance tees, tennis polos and quarter-zips for chilly morning matches.
  • Wrestling, BJJ and combat sports: team tees and hoodies for weigh-ins, travel and the club's merch table.

For Florida outdoor seasons, lightweight polyester beats heavy cotton almost every time. It wicks sweat, dries fast and keeps its shape after a weekend tournament.

Which Decoration Holds Up on Team Fabrics

Sports fabrics stretch, sweat and get washed constantly, so the decoration has to match the garment:

Garment and fabric Best method Why it works
Light polyester jerseys and sun shirts Sublimation Dye bonds into the fiber, so it breathes and can't crack or peel (we don't sublimate; we print these with DTF)
Dark or colored polyester jerseys DTF Bright, flexible names and numbers on any color, with no setup fee
Cotton or blend practice tees for a full roster Screen printing Low cost per shirt on runs of 100+ through our team; setup quoted with your order
Polos, warm-ups, quarter-zips and caps Embroidery Polished, durable and wash-proof; $35 digitizing per design
Caps for boat crews and outdoor clubs PVC or embroidered patches Hold their shape through water, sun and sweat

One technical note: dyed polyester in red, royal or black can bleed into light screen-print inks over time (dye migration). That's one reason DTF and sublimation are usually the safer choices for branded game jerseys.

Golf Tournament and Club Apparel

Golf outings and club leagues usually want a polished look rather than a jersey. The classic package is a moisture-wicking polo with an embroidered left-chest logo about 3.5–4 in. wide, the event name and year on the sleeve, and a matching cap. Quarter-zips cover cool early tee times, and women's-cut polos make sure every player gets a good fit.

Keep sponsor logos off player polos; they fit better on volunteer and staff tees, where a full back print can list every hole sponsor. Player gifts with a personalized name or the tournament date on the sleeve become the polo people wear for years. Logo golf apparel is one of the best fits for embroidery, since the stitched finish suits the course dress code and holds up to sun and frequent washing.

Fishing Tournaments, Boat Crews and Sailing Clubs

Life on the water calls for sun protection first. Long-sleeve performance shirts with a UPF rating keep anglers and crews covered through a full day on the flats, and light colors stay cooler. Sublimation prints edge-to-edge art (water, fish, charts) straight into light polyester, so the design breathes and never cracks; we don't offer sublimation, but our DTF prints carry bold art on the same shirts.

Put the boat or club name large across the back and crew names on the sleeve. Tournament shirts can carry the event, date and sponsor list. For caps, PVC patches shrug off saltwater and spray better than most decorations. See our fishing and boat crew shirts for sun shirt styles, fabrics and fits.

Fan Wear and Spirit Packages for Families

The people cheering want gear too. Parents' shirts with their player's name and number on the back are the most requested fan item, followed by matching hoodies and caps for cold-weather tournaments. A spirit package (a tee, a hoodie and a cap in team colors) gives families one easy order, and youth sizes let younger siblings match. There's even room for the dog, with its portrait on a family member's fan shirt.

Fan gear should use your own club's name and logo. Professional and college team marks are trademarked and need a license, so build spirit wear around your team's identity. For school-based programs, see our school sports and booster gear.

Collecting Sizes and Orders From the Whole Roster

The hardest part of most team orders isn't the design; it's collecting sizes from a dozen families. A simple process keeps it painless:

  1. Name one coordinator who gathers everything and approves the mockup.
  2. Share a size form with player name, number, size, cut and any fan add-ons, plus a firm deadline.
  3. Size by measurement. Youth XL and adult small overlap, so share the size chart and let families compare chest widths.
  4. Add a few extras in the middle sizes for late signups and growth spurts.

If you'd like families to order and pay individually, look for a vendor that runs online team stores; we don't run them yet. For most teams, one form and one order is the simplest path. Late additions are easy, because there's no minimum and reorders of the same design skip both the $35 digitizing fee and any screen-print setup.

Practice Wear vs. Game-Day Uniforms

Practice gear and game-day uniforms do different jobs, so plan them separately.

  • Practice wear gets dragged through dirt, sweat and the wash every few days. Keep it simple: a one- or two-color print on a durable tee, often in a lighter color for heat. Screen printing keeps the cost down on runs of 100+ pieces.
  • Game-day uniforms carry the names, numbers and full team colors. Light polyester jerseys suit sublimated designs, which we don't offer; we print DTF numbers and logos on any performance color.
  • Warm-ups and travel gear (hoodies, quarter-zips, joggers) make the team look unified walking into a tournament, and coaches' polos with an embroidered logo finish the sideline.

For training tees, tanks and joggers built for workouts rather than league play, browse our performance activewear.

Keeping uniforms looking new

A few washing habits add seasons to any decorated uniform. Turn jerseys inside out and wash in cold water. Skip fabric softener on performance fabric, because it coats the fibers and reduces wicking. Tumble dry low or hang dry, and never iron directly over printed numbers or names.

Raising Money With Branded Team Merchandise

Team spirit wear is one of the easiest fundraisers to run, because families already want it. A few approaches work well:

  • Season shirts with the full roster on the back, sold to parents and grandparents.
  • Pre-orders with a deadline, so you only order what's paid for.
  • Two or three designs, not ten. A hoodie and a tee usually outsell a long menu.
  • Concession-stand stock of caps and tees for tournament weekends.

Setup costs are simple to plan around: $35 one-time digitizing for embroidery, no setup fee for DTF, and screen-print setup quoted with a 100+ piece order. Garment prices are listed on each product page, which makes it easy to set a selling price with a clear margin. For more ways to raise money with branded apparel, read our team fundraiser ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you add player names and numbers?

Yes. Names and numbers can go on the back, front, sleeve or cap, with standard sizes such as 8–10 in. back numbers on adult jerseys and 6–8 in. on youth. Send a roster spreadsheet with each name, number, size and cut, and you'll approve your design before production, in our 3D Custom Designer or, for 100+ pieces, on a free digital mockup. Each player's piece is personalized from that list.

Do you set up online team stores?

Not yet. Most teams get the best result from a simple shared size form with a deadline: one coordinator collects names, numbers, sizes and fan add-ons, approves one mockup and places one order. Late additions can be ordered afterward in any quantity, since there's no minimum.

What's the minimum for custom team apparel?

There's no minimum. Order one jersey for a new player or outfit an entire league. One-time setup fees are $35 digitizing for embroidery, nothing for DTF and a quoted screen-print setup on 100+ piece orders, and reorders of the same design skip them, so larger custom sports apparel orders spread setup further, but volume is never required.

Can you make custom golf apparel for a tournament?

Yes. Most tournaments order moisture-wicking polos with an embroidered left-chest logo, the event name and year on the sleeve, and matching caps. Volunteer and staff tees can carry a full sponsor list on the back. Player gifts can be personalized with names. Women's-cut polos and quarter-zips round out the package.

Do you make fully sublimated jerseys?

No. Sublimation puts all-over designs onto light-colored polyester jerseys and shirts, giving edge-to-edge color that can't crack or peel, but we don't offer it. We don't cut and sew garments, so uniforms printed as flat panels before sewing, the method behind dark, fully sublimated kits, aren't something we make. Instead, we print DTF numbers and logos on jerseys of any color.

How long do team orders take?

Timing depends on the decoration method, the quantity and how quickly the mockup is approved. Tell us your first game or event date when you request a quote, and we'll confirm whether it's realistic before you approve. Rush orders are available, with the rush fee quoted with your order. Orlando-area teams can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse, or we ship anywhere in the US.
