Bucket vs. Boonie: Brim, Crown and Chin-Strap Differences
They look like cousins, and they are, but each is built for a different day.
| Feature | Bucket hat | Boonie hat |
|---|---|---|
| Brim | About 2 to 2.5 in, angled down | Wider, about 2.5 to 3 in, often stiffer |
| Crown | Soft, rounded, low | Taller, often with a fabric band or loops |
| Strap | Usually none | Adjustable chin cord with a toggle |
| Extras | Sometimes vent eyelets | Side snaps to fold the brim up, vents |
| Best for | Streetwear, festivals, beach days | Fishing, hiking, boating, all-day sun |
Sizing: bucket hats usually come in banded sizes such as S/M and L/XL, or as one size. Measure around your head across the mid-forehead and just above the ears, then check the size range on each listing. A boonie's chin cord keeps it on in a breeze on the water, which makes it a smart pick for boat crews and fishing charters.
Where Embroidery Sits on a Soft Crown
A bucket hat has no stiff front panel, so the crown has to be stabilized with backing while it's stitched. That's why simple, bold designs look best here.
| Placement | Typical size | Works best for |
|---|---|---|
| Front crown | Up to about 4 in wide, 2 in tall | Main logo, wordmark |
| Side or back crown | About 2 to 3 in wide, 1.5 in tall | Small icon, name, website |
| Brim edge | Small text, depending on construction | Short phrase or initials |
A few rules for clean embroidery on a bucket:
- Keep lettering at least a quarter inch tall, and skip hairlines.
- Two to four thread colors read best on a soft, curved crown.
- On a reversible bucket, the back of the embroidery and its backing show on the reverse side. If you want both sides wearable, choose a print instead.
Each new embroidered design has a one-time $35 digitizing fee. Once it's paid, you can download the stitch file from your account, and reorders of the same design skip the fee.
Why Festivals, Fishing Brands and Merch Lines Love a Branded Bucket
Festival and streetwear merch. Buckets photograph well and sell well at a merch table, and the soft crown packs flat in a bag. A tonal stitched logo looks premium, while a bold full-color print grabs attention in a crowd.
Fishing and outdoor brands. A 360-degree brim shades the ears and the back of the neck, which matters on a flats boat or a long day on the lake. Pair boonies and buckets with camo and outdoor caps for a full outdoor line under one logo.
Summer and beach events. Company beach days, surf contests and pool parties in the Florida heat all call for shade more than a ball cap provides.
Custom boonie hats for charter captains and guide services usually carry a small embroidered logo on the front and the business name or phone number on the back, so the branded hat doubles as a business card on the dock.
Cotton Twill, Nylon or Reversible: Custom Fabric Choices
- Cotton twill: soft, breathable and classic. Holds embroidery well and softens with every wash. Best for everyday and streetwear buckets.
- Nylon or polyester: quick-drying and light, so it's the better choice around water, sweat and afternoon storms.
- Reversible: two looks in one hat, usually a solid side and a pattern side. Printing suits it best for the reason above.
Light colors like white, khaki, sand and light blue stay cooler in direct sun. If you need more shade than any bucket offers, read about straw and sun hats for wide-brim options.
Printing on buckets: thread can't reproduce gradients, photos or tiny detail, so full-color art goes through DTF printing, with no setup fee. Want an all-over pattern? Sublimation can cover light polyester buckets edge to edge, though it isn't a method we offer. Compare every method on our full-color printing options page.
Trips and Bachelorettes: Personalized Buckets
Buckets are a natural fit for group trips because they fold into a bag and look good in photos. Popular personalized ideas:
- A bachelorette set with each guest's name on the back and the event date on the side
- Family reunion or vacation buckets with the family name and year
- A cruise group set with everyone's name in matching thread
- Birthday trip hats with a short inside joke
Every name in a group order gets its own mockup so you can check spelling first. For more layouts and color pairings, browse our bucket hat design ideas.
Small Runs, Big Runs and Shipping
There's no minimum, so one personalized bucket costs the same setup as a branded run of 200. Setup is one-time:
- Embroidery: $35 digitizing per design. Across 50 hats that's 70 cents each, and the file is yours.
- DTF printing: no setup fee.
- Screen printing: for tee orders of 100+ pieces through our team, with setup quoted with your order.
Both setup fees are charged once per design, so reorders, and the same design on a cap or tee, never pay them again.
The price per hat depends on the blank, fabric, quantity, stitch count and how many placements you add. Each product page shows the live price for that style.
To order: pick a style and color, upload your artwork (SVG or PDF best, or a high-resolution PNG or JPG; AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote), and tell us the placement. Design it live in our 3D Custom Designer, or request a bulk quote for 100+ pieces and get a free mockup to approve before anything is produced.
Shipping and timing: orders ship anywhere in the US, and Orlando-metro customers can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse. If you have a festival, trip or launch date, tell us your in-hand date when you request a quote. Rush production is available when the date is close, with the rush fee quoted with your order.
Caring for a bucket hat
With no stiff front panel, buckets are easier to clean than structured caps. Hand-wash in cool water with mild detergent, reshape, and air-dry flat or over a bowl. Skip hot water and the dryer, since cotton can shrink.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you embroider a bucket hat?
Yes. Embroidery works well on the front, sides and back of a bucket hat's soft crown, with front logos up to about 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall. Each new design has a one-time $35 digitizing fee, and you'll preview it in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is produced, with a free mockup on 100+ pieces.
What is the difference between a bucket hat and a boonie hat?
A bucket hat has a shorter, downward-angled brim and a soft, low crown with no strap. A boonie has a wider brim, a taller crown, an adjustable chin cord and often side snaps and vents, so it's built for fishing, hiking and long days in the sun.
Do bucket hats work for printing?
Yes. DTF printing handles full-color logos, photos and gradients with no setup fee, and it's the better choice for reversible buckets because nothing shows through to the other side. For an all-over pattern, sublimation is the usual method, though it isn't one we offer.
Is there a minimum for custom bucket hats?
No. You can order a single bucket hat with a name or logo, or hundreds for a festival or brand drop. Embroidered logos have a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design and embroidered names are $10 per name, while DTF printing has no setup fee, and larger orders lower the cost per hat.
