Back Patches, Rockers and Center Patches Explained
A club back is built from up to three pieces:
- Center patch: the club's emblem or logo, sitting in the middle of the back.
- Top rocker: a curved banner above the center patch, usually carrying the club name.
- Bottom rocker: a curved banner below it, often carrying a chapter, city, state or motto.
Layouts come as one-piece (everything in a single patch), two-piece (center plus one rocker) or three-piece (center plus both rockers). Layout carries meaning in riding culture, so the decision belongs to your club; we stitch the layout your club has approved. Riding clubs, charity groups, veterans' riders and dealer groups often use one- and two-piece designs.
One ground rule: you need to own the design or have your club's permission. We won't reproduce another club's patch, and we'll ask if something looks like someone else's colors.
Small Vest Patches and Personalized Name Tabs
The front of a vest tells the rest of the story. Common pieces include:
- Name tabs: a rider's personalized road name, usually on the left chest.
- Officer tabs: President, Vice President, Road Captain, Secretary, Treasurer and similar roles.
- Club tabs: a small "MC" or "RC" tab and a chapter or state tab.
- Event and rally patches: a design for each ride, run or rally you've completed.
- Memorial patches: a personalized tribute with a rider's name and dates, worn by the whole club.
- Small accents: flags, service branch tributes and mileage or year patches.
Every tab in an order can carry a different name, with no minimum per name. Send the list as typed text, one per line, and check every spelling on your digital mockup.
Large-Format Back Patch Sizing
| Patch | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Center patch | 10"–12" wide |
| Top rocker | 12"–14" wide, 3"–4" tall |
| Bottom rocker | 12"–14" wide, 3"–4" tall |
| One-piece back patch | 10"–13" wide |
| Name or officer tab | 1" x 4" |
| "MC" or "RC" tab | 1" x 2" |
| Rally, event or memorial patch | 3"–4" |
Measure the vest back from seam to seam before you order; an adult vest usually leaves 14 to 18 inches of usable width, and a patch that runs into the armhole seams won't sit flat. Rockers are cut on a curve that follows the arc of the center patch, with about half an inch of space between pieces so each one can be sewn on its own.
Custom back patches for a vest are large, heavy embroideries. A full-coverage 10-inch center patch can run past 100,000 stitches, which makes it stiff. Many clubs choose 75% coverage, letting the twill color act as background, for a lighter patch that flexes with the vest.
Club Detail: Embroidered or PVC
Embroidered is the standard for custom biker patches, and for good reason. Thread looks right on leather and denim, a large back piece stays light enough to wear all day, and a raised merrowed border is the toughest edge for rockers. Detailed center patches with sharp inside corners get a heat-cut edge instead. Keep lettering at least a quarter inch tall; on rockers, bold block letters read from a car length away.
PVC suits small accent patches, such as a flag, a skull or a state outline, where its fine detail and weatherproof finish shine. At back-patch size it gets heavy and stiff, so we rarely recommend it for a full back. Small debossed leather patches also look sharp on a leather vest front.
Attaching Patches to Leather Vests and Cuts
Leather needs to be sewn. An iron won't bond adhesive to leather, and the heat can scorch or shrink the hide.
- Position the patch with double-sided tape or a few dabs of leather cement so it can't shift.
- Open the lining if your vest has an access zip or opening, so you stitch only through the leather.
- Use a leather needle and waxed or heavy polyester thread.
- Stitch through the border, just inside the edge, with even stitches about an eighth of an inch apart.
- Double the stitching at the corners and rocker ends, where wind pulls hardest.
A leather or upholstery shop with a heavy-duty machine can also do it. We supply the patches; we don't sew onto vests sent in from elsewhere.
On denim and canvas vests, iron-on backing works for small patches, but sew large back pieces too. For placement on riding jackets, see our patches for denim and leather jackets. Prefer the club name stitched on apparel instead? Our page on embroidery straight onto vests and jackets covers direct embroidery on the garments we supply.
Branded Patches for Riding Clubs, Shops and Charity Rides
Clubs aren't the only ones wearing patches. Motorcycle shops, dealers and bike builders sell branded logo patches as merch, since riders will put a good one on a vest. Charity rides and poker runs give branded event patches to every registered rider, and a year on each design turns them into collectibles. Riding groups for veterans, first responders and church communities use them to welcome new members.
For any of these, the ordering is the same:
- Send your art. SVG or PDF files are best; a high-resolution PNG or JPG or a photo of an old patch works too. AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote.
- Approve your mockup. See it in our 3D Custom Designer, or get a free mockup with a bulk quote for 100+ pieces.
- Pay digitizing once. Embroidered designs carry a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design, and your quote shows how many designs a set includes. The file is then yours to download, and reorders of the same design skip the fee.
Size, thread coverage, border and quantity drive the per-patch price, and live prices are on each patch product in this collection. Orlando-metro clubs can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse, or we ship anywhere in the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a standard back patch?
Most center patches are 10 to 12 inches wide, and top and bottom rockers run 12 to 14 inches wide and 3 to 4 inches tall. One-piece back patches are usually 10 to 13 inches wide. Measure your vest back from seam to seam first, and we'll size the set to fit on your mockup.
Can iron-on patches go on a leather vest?
No. Iron-on adhesive won't bond properly to leather, and the heat can scorch or shrink it. Sew patches onto leather with a leather needle and heavy thread, stitching through the border, or have a leather shop machine-sew them. Iron-on works on denim and canvas vests for small patches; sew larger back pieces.
Do you make one-piece and three-piece back patches?
Yes. We make one-piece, two-piece and three-piece back patches to your club's design, plus matching name, officer and chapter tabs. Layout carries meaning in riding culture, so confirm what your club has approved. Each piece is shown on your mockup so you can check curves, spacing and spelling before production.
Can you recreate a club patch from an old patch or sketch?
Yes. Send a straight-on photo of the old patch next to a ruler, or a sketch with measurements. We'll redraw and digitize it and clean up faded or frayed areas; request a bulk quote for 100+ pieces and we'll send a free mockup to approve. You'll need to be the club or have its permission to reproduce the design.
How long does a vest patch order take?
Timing depends on size, quantity and how many pieces are in the set, and production starts once you approve your mockup. Need custom motorcycle patches for a ride or rally date? Rush orders are available, with the rush fee quoted with your order. If you're comparing makers, here's our guide to picking the right patch shop.
