Print Methods: Screen Print, DTF, DTG and Sublimation
Good custom hoodie printing starts with the right method. Each one puts ink on fleece differently, and the best choice depends on your design, quantity and garment.
| Method | How it works | Best for | Feel | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen printing | Ink pushed through a mesh screen, one screen per color | Bold 1 to 6 color designs across many pieces | Opaque, durable, slightly raised | Quoted with 100+ piece orders |
| DTF (direct to film) | Design printed on film, then heat-pressed onto the hoodie | Full-color art on any blend or garment color | Smooth and flexible | No setup fee |
| DTG (direct to garment) | Inkjet prints straight into the fabric | Photos and fine detail on high-cotton hoodies | Softest hand | Not offered by us (we print with DTF) |
| Sublimation | Dye bonds with polyester fibers | All-over and edge-to-edge prints | No feel at all | Not offered by us (we print with DTF) |
Screen printing is the workhorse for simple, high-contrast designs, and the per-piece price drops quickly as quantity rises. DTF is the most flexible option for small runs and colorful art on dark fleece. DTG gives the softest result on cotton-rich hoodies, though we don't offer it. For raised lettering on a matching cap, choose 3D puff embroidery (we offer puff on hats only); if you'd rather try puff print ink, ask on your quote and we'll tell you whether it suits your design. Front, Back, Sleeve and Hood: Print Placement Guide
| Placement | Typical print size (adult) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full front | 10 to 12 in. wide | Ends above the kangaroo pocket, so it's shorter than a tee print |
| Left chest | 3.5 to 4 in. wide | Pairs well with a large back print |
| Full back | 10 to 12 in. wide | The biggest canvas on a hoodie |
| Sleeve | Up to 3.5 in. wide, running down the arm | Names, dates, sponsors, handles |
| Side of hood | 3 to 4 in. | Small logos and initials |
| Back yoke | 3 to 4 in. tall | Just below the hood seam |
The kangaroo pocket's seams interrupt anything printed across them, so full-front designs sit above it. Front-and-back combinations are the most popular choice for group orders. On zip-ups, the zipper splits the chest, so larger designs move to the back; see our printed zip-up styles for examples.
Branded Prints for Teams, Events and Merch Drops
Printing is the go-to for groups. A team can carry a mascot on the front and printed names and numbers for teams on the back, with each hoodie personalized to its player. Event organizers often print the date, sponsors and a sleeve hashtag, and businesses use a small chest logo with a large back print for branded staff hoodies.
For merch drops, screen printing keeps per-piece costs down on runs of 100+ of one design, while DTF lets a creator test several designs in small quantities with no setup fee. Branded merch for bands, gyms, churches and fundraisers follows the same simple process: upload, preview, approve, print.
Full-Color Personalized Gifts and One-Offs
A single hoodie with a photo, a pet portrait, a family joke or a name is where digital printing shines. DTF reproduces gradients, skin tones and fur detail without the cost of screens, so a personalized gift costs the same to set up as an order of fifty.
Popular ideas include a couple's photo on the back, a grandchild's drawing on the front, a pet's face on a pocket-front pullover and a birth year down the sleeve. Each piece can be completely different, which makes personalized family and friend sets easy to order together.
All-Over Custom Prints and Sublimated Hoodies
Sublimation turns dye into a gas that bonds with polyester, so the design becomes part of the fabric instead of sitting on top. That allows a true edge-to-edge, custom all over print hoodie with no feel, no cracking and no limit on colors.
The trade-offs: sublimation needs a polyester-rich, white or light-colored hoodie, and it can't print white or put light colors on a dark garment. Expect a smoother, lighter fabric than classic cotton-blend fleece. Custom sublimated hoodies are popular for teams, festivals and anyone who wants pattern from cuff to hood. We don't offer sublimation, but DTF prints full-color designs on any hoodie color.
Hoodie and Sweatshirt Printing Side by Side
Printing on a hoodie and a crewneck is nearly identical, with two differences. A crewneck has no pocket, so the front print can run taller. And on a hoodie, drawstrings hang over the upper chest, so we keep important details slightly lower or to one side.
Many groups order both, using one design for consistency. If you'd like the hood-free version, browse our printed crewneck sweatshirts.
Artwork Tips for Crisp, Long-Lasting Prints
- File type: vector SVG or PDF for screen printing (AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote); a 300 dpi PNG at full print size for DTF.
- Line weight: keep lines and text strokes at least 1 mm thick so they hold on textured fleece.
- Transparency: avoid soft, semi-transparent edges and drop shadows for DTF; they print as speckled halos.
- Contrast: check ink color against garment color. Dark ink on a dark hoodie disappears.
- Color count: for screen printing, fewer colors means less setup.

Ink vs. Thread on Fleece
Choose printing for photos, gradients, large designs and many colors. Choose embroidery for small logos, names and a premium, textured finish that lasts. Large stitched designs are heavy and stiff, so a big back design is almost always printed. Each hoodie uses one method, so choose the one that suits the whole design; one order can still include both embroidered and printed hoodies. Compare our embroidered hoodie options to decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a printed hoodie cost?
It depends on quantity, print method, number of colors, print locations and the hoodie you choose. DTF has no setup fee, which keeps one-offs and small runs affordable. Screen printing, for orders of 100+ pieces, has a one-time setup per color, so it gets cheaper per piece as quantities grow. For a full breakdown, read what a printed hoodie costs.
Can you print on the sleeves and the hood?
Yes. Sleeve prints run up to about 3.5 inches wide down the arm, and the side of the hood takes a small 3 to 4 inch design. Both are popular add-ons to a front or back print. Each extra location is printed separately, so it adds to the per-piece price.
Is there a minimum for printed hoodies?
No. Custom printed hoodies can be ordered one at a time with DTF, and screen printing is available through our team on orders of 100+ pieces. Because screen printing carries a one-time setup per color, it makes the most financial sense on larger runs, while digital methods suit small orders and one-offs.
Will the print crack or peel after washing?
A properly cured print shouldn't. Cracking usually comes from under-cured ink, heavy stretching or a hot dryer. Wash your hoodie inside out in cold water, tumble dry low or hang dry, and never iron directly on the print. Screen prints and DTF transfers hold up especially well; DTG fades gradually, like a favorite vintage tee.
Which print method works best for photos?
DTG and DTF are best for photos. DTG gives the softest result on cotton-rich hoodies (we don't offer it), while DTF, our print method, works on any blend and keeps colors vivid on dark fleece. Send the highest-resolution image you have, ideally 300 dpi at print size, and we'll check it before printing.
