Women's Cuts vs. Unisex: How the Fit Differs
Unisex tees are cut straight from armpit to hem, which fits most men well and leaves most women with extra fabric at the waist and sleeves that land near the elbow. Women's cuts change four things:
| Feature | Unisex tee | Women's tee |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulders | Wider, squarer | Narrower, slightly sloped |
| Body | Straight through the waist | Tapered at the waist, shaped side seams |
| Sleeves | Longer and looser | Shorter, often a slimmer cap sleeve |
| Neckline | Crew | Crew, scoop or V-neck |
The practical rule: women's sizes run about one size smaller than unisex. If you wear a unisex medium, start with a women's large for the same roominess, or stay at medium for a closer fit. The surest way to choose is to measure a favorite tee flat, armpit to armpit, and compare it with the size chart on the product page.
Custom Fits: Fitted, Relaxed and V-Neck Styles
Most women's tees fall into three styles:
- Fitted crew: close through the chest and waist. The cleanest look for branded staff shirts and boutique merch.
- Relaxed: a little more room through the body with a shaped hem, the comfortable middle ground for events and everyday wear.
- V-neck and scoop neck: softer, dressier necklines. Drop the front design about an inch so it clears the neckline, or move it to the left chest.
Placement changes on a narrower chest. A front print sized for a men's XL can wrap toward the side seams on a women's small, so a full-front design usually works best around 9 to 10 inches wide on women's sizes. DTF has no setup fee at all. Screen printing's setup (for orders of 100+ pieces) is one time per design, so sizing the same design for women's and unisex cuts isn't charged twice. Embroidery on a light tee can pucker, so keep stitched logos small or choose a heavier blank.
Maternity and Bump-Friendly Tees
Custom maternity t-shirts are popular for pregnancy announcements, gender reveals, baby showers and the classic "Mama Bear" or due-date tee. Dedicated maternity tees are cut with extra length and room through the belly; we don't carry them, but our women's tees work for a bump too.
Choose a relaxed women's fit in a stretchy cotton/poly or tri-blend one or two sizes up, and you can keep wearing it after the baby arrives. Then decide where the design should sit. A print on the upper chest stays put as the bump grows, while a design meant to sit on the bump will stretch with it, so a flexible DTF print is the better choice there. Tell us how far along you'll be on the event date, and we'll place the design to match.
Matching Tees for Girls' Trips and Showers, Each One Personalized
Group shirts look best when everyone shares one design and each person gets her own detail. Popular ideas:
- Bachelorette weekends: "Bride" for the bride, "Bride Squad" or each person's name for everyone else. Our bachelorette and party shirts collection has more event styles.
- Bridal and baby showers: hostess and grandma-to-be shirts in matching colors.
- Birthday and cruise trips: the destination and year on the back, a personalized name or nickname on the sleeve.
- Mother's Day and family gifts: a child's drawing or a family photo on personalized photo tees.
Names are added shirt by shirt with DTF, which has no setup fee, so personalized group orders stay simple. Send a list of names and sizes; for photo shirts, a high-resolution PNG or JPG. You'll preview every design before production, in our 3D Custom Designer or, for bulk orders of 100+ pieces, on a free mockup from our team, so check every spelling there. Planning around a wedding date? Rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order; tell us your in-hand date and we'll confirm it before you approve.
Women's Cuts for Branded Team and Staff Orders
Mixed-gender teams look sharper when every player gets a shirt that fits. You can order the same design on women's and unisex tees in one order, with the design sized for each. One practical tip: shirt colors vary a little between blank lines, so order women's and unisex tees from the same brand family where possible, and compare the colors on your mockup.
Salons, gyms, boutiques and restaurants often choose fitted women's tees for front-of-house staff and add a branded left-chest logo. For a dressier uniform, our custom polo shirts come in matching women's cuts. For cooler months, add custom hoodies with the same logo.
Size Chart and Fabric Guide
Women's styles run from XS up through extended sizes. Exact measurements vary by style, so always use the chart on each product page.
| Fabric | Typical weight | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ringspun cotton | About 4.2 to 4.5 oz | Soft, light, drapes well | Everyday tees, events, DTG prints |
| Cotton/poly blend (CVC) | About 4.2 to 4.5 oz | Soft, shrinks less | Staff shirts, frequent washing |
| Tri-blend | About 3.8 to 4.2 oz | Softest, heathered, drapey | Boutique merch, vintage-look prints |
| Performance polyester | About 3.8 to 4.5 oz | Smooth, wicks sweat | Gyms, races, Florida summers |
Tri-blends and ringspun cotton feel softest, and our high-quality blanks collection groups the premium options. Wash cold, inside out, and tumble dry low to limit shrinking.
There's no minimum, so one personalized tee is a complete order. Embroidery digitizing is $35 per design, and screen-print setup on orders of 100+ pieces is quoted with the order. Setup fees are one-time per design: reorders, and the same design on other products, never pay them again; only a design change needs new setup. Orlando-metro customers can pick up at our Orlando-area warehouse, and every order can ship anywhere in the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does sizing differ between women's custom t-shirts and unisex?
Women's tees run about one size smaller than unisex, with narrower shoulders, a tapered waist and shorter sleeves. If you usually wear a unisex medium, a women's large gives similar room and a women's medium fits closer. Measure a favorite tee flat, armpit to armpit, and compare it with the product's size chart.
Do you offer maternity t-shirts?
No, we don't carry dedicated maternity cuts, but a relaxed women's tee in a stretchy blend, one or two sizes up, gives room through the bump for announcements, showers and due-date shirts. Tell us your due date and event date, and we'll place the design where it looks best.
Can I mix women's and unisex styles in one order?
Yes. One design can go on women's and unisex tees in the same order, sized to suit each cut. DTF has no setup fee, and screen-print setup is one time per design, so resizing for each cut adds no setup. Your mockup shows both versions before production.
Which women's tees are softest?
Tri-blends (polyester, cotton and rayon) are the softest, with a light, drapey feel and a heathered look. Ringspun cotton comes next and takes DTG prints beautifully. If you want custom shirts for women that feel like a retail favorite, choose either one and keep the print light so it doesn't stiffen the fabric.
