Upload a Photo to Our 3D Custom Designer
Ordering a photo tee takes four steps. Pick a shirt style and color, upload your picture, add any text (a name, a date, a punchline) and preview your design. You'll see it live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is produced, showing the photo's size and position on the shirt.
A photo with a busy background often looks better as a cut-out, with just the person or pet and no rectangle around them. If you'd like the background removed, mention it when you order; orders with art clean-up get a proof to approve before production. Only upload photos you took or have permission to use; professional portraits, such as school or wedding photos, usually need the photographer's release.
Face Shirts, Face Golf Shirts and Funny Photo Gifts
Face shirts are the reliable laugh of any birthday, bachelor party or retirement. The classic is one giant cut-out face on the front of a bright tee. For a bigger reaction, repeat the face in a pattern. Edge-to-edge all-over prints use sublimation, which we don't offer, but our custom Hawaiian shirts can carry a repeating face print on the back with DTF.
Face golf shirts and polos follow the same idea. A repeating face pattern can be sublimated across a white or light polyester polo (not a method we offer), or a single face can be printed on the chest with DTF for a subtler joke at the club outing. Pets get the same treatment; see our pet portrait shirts for dog and cat faces. For more inspiration, browse these funny shirt ideas before you choose a photo.
Memorial and Tribute Shirts
A personalized memorial shirt lets a family carry someone with them at a service, a celebration of life or a walk in their name, usually with one clear photo, the person's name and dates and a short line such as "Forever in our hearts." Our memorial shirts page covers choosing and preparing the photo, wording ideas, shirt colors and ordering when time is short.
Collages and Front-and-Back Photo Prints
A front print on an adult tee is typically about 10 to 12 inches wide, which comfortably fits one large photo or a collage of four to six smaller ones. Beyond six, faces get too small to recognize from across a room, so move extra photos to the back. A popular layout puts a single hero photo on the front and a grid of memories, names or a date on the back.
Photos print with full-color digital methods, not screen printing, because screens can't reproduce smooth skin tones and gradients without many colors. DTG sprays ink into the cotton and feels softest on 100% cotton tees. DTF prints onto a film that's pressed onto the shirt, so it works on cotton, polyester, blends and dark colors. We print photos with DTF, which has no setup fee. See DTF vs. DTG printing compared for the details, or learn how we print shirts across every method.
Getting a Sharp Print From a Phone Picture
Most phone cameras capture plenty of detail for a full-size print. What ruins photo shirts is the copy, not the camera. Follow these rules:
- Send the original file. Upload from your camera roll, not a screenshot or a photo saved from social media, which can shrink an image to a fraction of its size.
- Aim for 300 dpi at print size. A 10-inch-wide print needs an image about 3,000 pixels wide for the sharpest result. Around 150 dpi can still look good for a photo; much lower turns blurry.
- Use good light. Daylight from a window beats flash. Avoid heavy filters and digital zoom.
- Check the face. Zoom in on the eyes. If they're soft on your screen, they'll be soft on the shirt.
If your picture is too small, our 3D Custom Designer tells you before you order instead of after printing. File types: high-resolution PNG and JPG are accepted, and SVG or PDF files are best for logos and text. AI and EPS files can be sent with a bulk quote.
Photo Shirts for Events and Teams
Photo tees work for more than gifts. Senior-night and graduation shirts carry each athlete's photo and number. A coach's retirement shirt puts the team photo on the back. Birthday crews wear the guest of honor's baby picture. Bands, food trucks and small businesses use product or performance shots on branded merch tees that fans buy.
For team and event orders, keep one shared design and swap in personalized details, such as each player's photo or name, where they matter. Because DTF has no setup fee, changing the photo on every shirt costs no more to set up than printing the same one.
Matching Photo Shirts for the Whole Group
Group photo shirts work best with one design everyone recognizes: the family patriarch's face, a vintage reunion photo or a pet everyone loves. Give each branch of the family its own shirt color, add personalized names on the back and collect sizes early with a simple form. Our family reunion shirts cover layouts, colors and planning for big groups. Want the same photo for cooler weather? It prints just as well on custom sweatshirts and hoodies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What photo resolution do I need for custom shirts with pictures?
Aim for 300 dpi at the printed size, which means about 3,000 pixels wide for a 10-inch print. Most phone photos meet that if you upload the original file rather than a screenshot or social media download. Around 150 dpi can still print acceptably for photos; our 3D Custom Designer flags anything too small before you order.
Can you print a photo on the front and back?
Yes. You can print one photo on the front and another on the back, or put a hero photo on the front and a collage, names or dates on the back. Each print location adds to the price per shirt, but DTF has no setup fee for either side.
Can you put faces on a golf shirt or polo?
Yes. A single face can be printed on the chest of most polos with DTF, and a repeating face pattern can go on the back for a bigger laugh (full all-over sublimation isn't something we offer). Upload the photo and preview it in our 3D Custom Designer.
How long do photo prints last in the wash?
With good care, a DTG or DTF photo stays bright through years of regular wear, and sublimated prints don't crack or peel because the dye is in the fabric. Turn the shirt inside out, wash cold, skip bleach and tumble dry low or hang to dry. Never iron directly on the print.
Can I order just one photo shirt?
Yes. There's no minimum, and DTF has no setup fee, so you can order a single shirt as a personalized gift without paying for extras. You'll preview it live in our 3D Custom Designer before it's printed.
