Script Lettering, Monograms and Initials

The lettering style sets the mood of a name hat before anyone reads the words.

• Script. Flowing, connected letters look elegant and a little retro, which is why custom script hats are a favorite for brides, moms and vintage-style names. Script needs more height than block letters because its thin connecting strokes are the first thing to disappear in thread. Plan on lowercase letters about 3/8 inch tall or more.
• Block and sans-serif. Clean capitals stay readable at the smallest sizes, down to about 1/4 inch tall. Best for side text, dates and longer phrases.
• Varsity and collegiate. Bold, sporty letters with a classic team feel. They look great in two thread colors or as 3D puff embroidery.
• Serif. Classic and refined, good for surnames, family names and "Est." dates.

Monograms. A traditional three-letter monogram for one person puts the last initial in the center, larger than the first and middle initials on either side. A couple's monogram often uses both first initials with the shared last initial in the middle. Monograms look polished on low-profile dad hats and beanies.

Raised initials. 3D puff embroidery lifts a single initial or a short, chunky word right off a structured front. It works with bold block letters about half an inch tall or more; thin script doesn't puff well.

Where the Name Goes: Front, Side or Back

Name on the side is the most popular personal touch because it pairs with any front design. On closed-back caps, there's no opening at the back, so a name can sit across the back center at full width. That makes fitted hats with your name a natural choice for players and collectors.

Wedding and Bachelorette Trucker Hats

Matching hats make the wedding weekend photos, and they get worn long after. Foam-front and cotton-front truckers are the usual pick because the tall, flat front holds bold lettering.

Popular wedding hat text:

• "Bride" in script for the bride, and "Bride Squad" or the couple's last name for the crew
• "Mrs." with the new last name and the wedding year on the side
• Each bridesmaid's name on the side, with the date on the back

Santa hats are the easiest holiday gift to personalize. The name goes on the white cuff, usually in red or green script. Because the cuff is plush, it's stitched with a thin topping layer that keeps the thread sitting on top of the pile instead of sinking into it. We don't carry Santa hats, but the same name-on-the-cuff idea works on the cuffed beanies we decorate.

• Family sets. Every name in the house, including the dog's, for the holiday card photo.
• Classroom and team gifts. One hat per kid, each with a first name.
• Company parties. Custom Santa hats with your branded logo on the cuff work well as party favors, staff gifts and holiday booth giveaways.

Pet Names and Photo Hats

Pet hats are some of the most fun designs to make, because the ideas are endless:

• Photo hats. A full-color photo of your dog or cat is printed with DTF. Embroidery can't reproduce a photograph, but printing captures fur color and expression clearly.
• Stitched pet names. "Biscuit's Mom," a pet's name with a paw print, or a simple line drawing of your pet in one thread color.
• Memorial hats. A pet's name and years on the side of a favorite cap.

The same photo idea works for people, too: a grandkid's picture on a hat for a grandparent, or a team photo for a coach. We don't make apparel for pets, but your pet's name or photo looks great on your own hat.

Veteran Hats and Military Caps: Service Years, Era and Unit Text

A veteran cap is a personal record, so the details matter. Common text includes:

• The veteran's name or call sign
• Years of service, such as "1987–2009"
• Service era, such as Vietnam, Gulf War or OIF/OEF
• Unit, squadron or ship name and number
• "Veteran," "Retired" or family text such as "Proud Military Mom"

Official branch seals, emblems and logos are trademarks, so we don't reproduce them. We stitch personalized text and original designs instead, often with an American flag on the side. Structured caps in black, navy or olive with gold or white thread give the classic look.

Gift Timing: When to Order

Name hats are almost always tied to a date: a wedding, a birthday, Christmas morning or Father's Day. Timing depends on quantity, the decoration method and how quickly you approve your proof, so tell us your in-hand date when you order and we'll confirm it before you approve. If the date is close, rush orders are available for a fee quoted with your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a name on the side of a hat?

Yes. The side panel is the most popular spot for a name. It fits about 1.5 to 2 inches of text, so first names, initials and dates work best. You can keep the front blank, add a logo or put a second line on the back. You'll see it live in our 3D Custom Designer before anything is produced.

Can you put a picture on a hat?

Yes. Photos are printed in full color with DTF. Pets, kids, couples and team photos all work. Embroidery can't reproduce a photograph, but it can stitch a simplified one-color outline. DTF has no setup fee, so a single photo hat is easy to order.

Which fonts can I choose for my text?

You can choose script, block, varsity, serif or a simple sans-serif, or send us the name of a font you like. For embroidery, keep script at least about 3/8 inch tall and block letters at least about 1/4 inch so every letter stays readable. Your mockup shows the exact lettering before production.

Can I order just one personalized hat?

Yes. There's no minimum, so one gift hat is fine. Printed names have no setup fee. Embroidered names, initials and monograms are $10 each, and logos or custom artwork have a one-time $35 digitizing fee per design that reorders never pay again.
